you just pop it in, and run setup. Besides I dont think the upgrade is worth it, WinME has no performance increase from Win98, and it is a bit buggier with most of my software than with 98. [sig]<p>Karl<br><a href=mailto:kb244@kb244.com>kb244@kb244.com</a><br><a href=
I tried that. After the program checks the system, a message pops up stating that the machine is already running Win98, and the upgrade version is required. The installation routine then aborts. [sig][/sig]
May I ask where you obtained this copy of WinME because my MSDN Subscription copy installs just fine(later uninstalled it since I didnt like it better than Win98, and it was causing problems with some games) [sig]<p>Karl<br><a href=mailto:kb244@kb244.com>kb244@kb244.com</a><br><a href=
Funny you mention that, I dont recall WinME being released at all, even as an OEM (Retail usally comes before OEM, and I havent heard any public announcment/or havent looked hard enough) [sig]<p>Karl<br><a href=mailto:kb244@kb244.com>kb244@kb244.com</a><br><a href=
you may not want to upgrade, here is a post from Riva Station:

Coffee or tea? Milk or sugar? Plastic or paper? Win98SE or WinME? All fascinating and important questions. Well, we can help you with the last one: Either one. From a gamer’s perspective, the differences are negligible. The GeForce2 yields slightly better results under ME, but the difference just isn’t great enough to justify an upgrade. The Voodoo5 shows no gain whatsoever.

I agree with KB, I've been listening to the experts and they all seem to say wait on ME, bugs have been fixed, but there still many, and it this points, its not worth leaving Windows 98.... [sig][/sig]
You people are no help to the poor guy. I don't think he ask any opinions about liking WinMe or not, just how to upgrade a oem version over Win98. I ranted enough, heres one way to upgrade, find the win.com file in the windows directory, and delete it or rename it. Now run the WinMe setup. Take note , you can't return your system to Win98 without formating and installing clean again.
well for starters I dont think the Win.com thing works with WinME, also having a full OEM , I think he may want to grab a retail upgrade CD (so he can least have the option of backing down to Win98 again) also keep in mind WinME has the removal of these objects that may make it a bit tricky to format clean without booting on a Win98 BootDisk:
[tt]
System Recovery - Wont allow you to mess with or delete system files
Removal of Dos Prompt and Real Mode - wont be able to use a dos console even if you tried to boot to real mode
Removal of Non-MS Networking - not sure how this affects the "format" but its just another thing removed
[/tt]
so if he does decide to try your method, he should have a bootdisk handy that supports going into dos mode. [sig]<p>Karl<br><a href=mailto:kb244@kb244.com>kb244@kb244.com</a><br><a href=
Thanks for everyone's help - especially covert-ops. After reading all the posts, various publications and a report that network shared DSL connections are adversly affected, the "upgrade" to Win ME may not be worth the trouble. This is probably a case where the old axiom "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" makes sense. [sig][/sig]
OK now Im scared.
Ive ordered WindowsME fm Microsoft to be delivered by Thursday. I have 2 machines at home. One has a WindowsOEM version of 95. The other has Win 98. Im mainly ordering the upgrade because I dont have the actual Win 98 CDRom in my posession. It was "borrowed" fm a friend.
I do a lot of playing around (not games) on the computer with my hardware and software and I plan on adding a network in my home.
Is the upgrade worth it???
Read some of the reviews I've posted above, they both ask that same question, as for the heck of it I "downloaded" and installed an OEM of WinME, funny thing is when I upgrade from Win98, I still have a Dos Prompt in the Accessories folder. But... there isnt a reboot into Dos mode tho, ( so I assume when I upgraded, it kept the shortcut, and a call to dosprmpt.pif or calling command.com will bring up Dos Prmpt) it's just not visible on a fresh install I guess. kb244, just as a FYI. My wife works for a non-profit group that was a test site for Windows 2000 (that's what she said comes up on the startup screen--I told her it's buz word is Windows Millenium, BUT ANYWAY, to get back to the reason for this post...) the OEM version is out and about--scattered as it may be--it's out there.
[red]AND WITH BUGS GALORE[/red]!! Don't bother with it just yet. [sig]<p> <br><a href=mailto: > </a><br><a href= > </a><br><b>FYI</b>...Jack <b>was</b> nimble, Jack <b>was</b> quick...until he got 3rd degree burns when his pants caught on fire.[/sig]
I just want to check with you, but you do know that
Win2000 and WinMe are totaly different OS, oh also WinMe will be officially release to the public masses on Sept 15th.
Also WinME(the latest, not any of the betas) performs just as well as Win98 , it just doesnt perform better. and the lack of some things might make you think twice, also considering 70-80% of the "new features" are free downloadables that can be installed onto 98.
