Upgrade Solaris version 2

Hi All,

I've got a couple of Solaris 9 servers acting as NBU master and media, versions 6.0 mp6.

I am going to upgrade these using SUN Live Upgrade to Solaris 10.

Before I start though does anyone have any experience of this and any NBU gotchas to look out for?

I've done plenty of live upgrades so am not worried about that, just how NBU behaves.

First off, back everything up.

After your upgrade to Solaris 10 and you're all set
make sure to check the following:

/etc/hosts
/etc/defaultrouter
/etc/netmasks
/etc/nsswitch.conf

restarting inet with svcadm restart inet

/etc/services needs the following:
bprd 13720/tcp bprd
bpdbm 13721/tcp bpdbm
bpcd 13782/tcp bpcd
vnetd 13724/tcp vnetd
vopied 13783/tcp vopied
bpjava-msvc 13722/tcp bpjava-msvc

visd 9284/tcp visd
vmd 13701/tcp vmd
acsd 13702/tcp acsd
tl8cd 13705/tcp tl8cd
odld 13706/tcp odld
ts8d 13709/tcp ts8d
tldcd 13711/tcp tldcd
tl4d 13713/tcp tl4d
tsdd 13714/tcp tsdd
tshd 13715/tcp tshd
tlmd 13716/tcp tlmd

make sure /etc/inetd.conf has these 4 entries at the end:
bpcd stream tcp nowait root /usr/openv/netbackup/bin/bpcd bpcd
vnetd stream tcp nowait root /usr/openv/bin/vnetd vnetd
vopied stream tcp nowait root /usr/openv/bin/vopied vopied
bpjava-msvc stream tcp nowait root /usr/openv/netbackup/bin/bpjava-msvc bpjava-msvc -transient

then run the command <inetconv> for Sol 10 services to work think that should do it besides bp.conf stuff

Also ensure tcp fusion is disabled when you've upgraded.

Judging from my latest post regarding spurious goings on with Sol9 and MP6 I may just upgrade regardless...

The longer I work with Netbackup the more I grow to dislike it...

I have made a good living off netbackup. It's not bad if you write some wrapper scripts around the native NBU commands to capture logs of backup activity and reporting. If there's something you have a big issue with, let me know. I may have something that can help solve certain problems. Why reinvent the wheel?

Graveslu, you may wish you hadn't asked that..;-)

To be fair I have used and administered Netbackup from V5.1 upwards and have had a few problems.
I am a unix admin so this is very much a second part to my role.
Upgrading 5.1 to 6.0 was relatively painless, apart from a simple issue with duplicate tape id's (which strangely enough was resolved by right clicking and deleting from the gui rather than trying to delete from the command line - which is unheard of for a unix guy - right clicking is for windows people).
We then introduced an extra master server and 5 media servers into the mix to support the decommisioning of Backup Exec, primarily to host Windows backups. Again, no major hiccups, I even started to like Netbackup at this point....and then we went to v 6.0 MP6.

Since then I have had major c4 tape library failures to the master server after a simple server patching exercise.
My bpduplication script no longer works and bombs out with error code 50 if I want to create more than 1 copy.
My second (original environment on Sol 9 v6.0 MP6) no longer shows me a RedHat client from the pull down when adding clients to policies.
On top of this Veritas support is provided by SUN, who can be helpful, and can be dreadful...

As I say, I did enjoy Netbackup when I could write a few scripts to get some relevant data to Mgmt e.t.c, but these days it is such a big part of my job ( one that none of my colleagues want to touch I should add ) that I find all the little Veritas anomalies tiring...

Anyway, thanks for the opportunity to have a rant, this has felt like therapy....
Now, where is my hammer. ;-)

I hear you. I've upgraded to Netbackup 6.5.2 and have had similar problems. Veritas was purchased by Symantec and I think they've offshored their coding. They made major changes to a lot of their binaries and radically changed the output and formats of a lot of their commands. I've had to re-write a lot of my scripts to work around the changes they introduced to get my reporting and automation scripts to work properly. There are days that can be just overwhelming, but I keep hammering away and it's getting better.

Bearing in mind all my bitching previously, I have to say that the people on this forum have been especially helpful and without that shared knowledge my Netbackup servers would have been thrown from the rooftop a while back.

I'm looking forward to trying the 6.5 upgrade...my boss keeps talking about de-duplication....;-)

NBU 6.5.2 is way better then 6.0 (which had lot's of bugs). Explore adding SAN disk cache or EMC/CDL's with virtual robots/tape drives to your environment if you want to play with tape duplication.
