I have two different questions regarding the Microstrategy Upgrade from version 6 to 7.

1. Does someone have experience using the upgrade wizard to upgrade projects from version 6 to 7 and was it was easy or painful? If it was hard, why?

2. I have a unique situation that I am proposing to do this under. This project has been on the shelf for a good while. I would have to restore from a past database that had the project under version 6 and upgrade the project to version 7. Any possible show stoppers?

Any feedback is really appreciated.

unless you have made lots of project customizations in 6, you should be ok...

There's a tech note on the support site that you should refer to before starting the process.

TN4103-007-0002 - The MicroStrategy 7.x migration process

I upgraded from 6 to 7.1.2 about 18 months ago. I used the Wizard and had no "appearent" problems. I say "appearent" because while checking how everything came over I noticed a few irregularities. For some reason, a few of my dimensional metrics lost their dimensionality. Also, though I had only 2 facts, I had over 200 metrics in the project. Each metric after the upgrade created it's own Base Formula. Although the reports would still work, the project itself was exteemely messy this way. I had to re-associate each metric with one of the two true facts.Be VERY thorough when checking after your upgrade. Check EVERYTHING for every object. All in all it took somewhere between 4 and 6 weeks to check everything, run all reports, and certify that all was well.

In two weeks time, I upgrade from 7.1.2 up to 7.2.2. Though it requires a metadata upgrade, I've been repeatedly assured by MicroStrategy and others who have been through the process that it is alot cleaner than the 6 to 7 run.

Good luck! On the bright side - it was definitely worth it. And you might as well not stop at 7.1 - after your initial upgrade, don't put off moving to 7.2.2: it's really amazing!

If you have any other questions, please post and I'll see if I can help. Remember to keep a copy of your original metadata and back up as you go along.

OH! One other thing! VERY IMPORTANT: Once you start the upgrade Wizard you must go through to the end; you can't do it part way.

Have fun!

forgot to mention that you should register a 6x project in 7x. this allows you to "run" a 6x project in 7x without first upgrading the metadata. You cannot create any new objects, but can view and run all existing 6x reports.
