Hi guys

I need some input into an upgrade I will be making to our backup system in the coming months. We are currently running 2 W2K servers, with an AIT1 tape drive backing up approx. 54gb of data a night. We are planning on moving a lot (and I mean A LOT!) of our old paper based files onto a new "paperless" filing system, so we will have heaps more to backup soon. This is at it's max now, so I will need another way to backup the additional data.

My plan was to stick with AIT, purchase an additional ATI2 drive, and run parallel backups at night - giving me over about 120 gb backup space. Also, keeping with AIT, the old tapes I have are compatible with the new drive - so I avoid having to ditch the orig system

Anyone got anything to add to this? Or any other backup ideas? I have also looked at removable IDE drives (scared of drive failure due to portability) and Offsite storage (boss not interested in cable connection to get the speed for backing up offsite)

Cheers,
Brett

Brett,
I have been using Idealstor, ejectable disk to disk backup appliance for over a year now and not had a failed drive. They provide the caddy with a protective storage box, I send my disk offsite every day and not had any problems.

Hi
Thanks for the input.... will keep that in mind.

I would say your plan makes sense to stick with the AIT format. Keep in mind your projected future capacity needed while you are purchasing now. You might be able to find an AIT-1 or 2 autoloader for a bit more cost but would get you several more years down the road.

Hi

I have talked management around to paying up... we are getting an AIT3 drive - to keep compatibility with our current tapes.

cheers
Brett
