I am investigating an upgrade from 7.232 to 8.9, what are the "gotchas" involved in this transition? Is this radically different than other OneWorld upgrades?
Either way, moving to ERP8.9 is pretty drastic.
We are currently preparing to move from B7332 to ERP8.10.
Some quick differences:
Quite a few database changes. Some tables have more/less fields. For example, the F4211 Sales Order Detail no longer contains the Salesman code. Instead, there is a new table with the Sales Order number, line number, and salesman code. This allows a single order to be credited to multiple salesmen.
The OneWorld Explorer goes bye-bye.
You will have to use Solution Explorer. Same functionality, but uses Tasks instead of menus. It will create a new look and feel for your users.
Security is done in a different way. It will all have to be reapplied. it will not convert over (or so I'm told)
Plan on some time to re-train your users, they'll need it.
Also, I'd recommend going to 8.10 instead of 8.9. At this point in time (Fall 2004) 8.10 and 8.9 have the SAME foundation code so will have equal "stability". 8.10 was built on the 8.9(update3) Tool Set. 8.10 will give you some better application enhancments, particularly in HR and Fixed Assets.
8.10 will also give you an additional 12-18 months before it becomes obsolete. and puts you as close to 8.11 as you can get w/o being on 8.11
NOTE: 8.11 is sched to be released winter/spring 04/05.
It will be a complete re-write of a LOT of the modules. It will be a WEB CLIENT ONLY. You will not have fat clients except for developer workstations. You WILL HAVE TO buy IBM WebSphere and it looks like you will WANT TO HAVE Citrix. It's not required, but doesn't make much sense to not have it in 8.11
Just an update.
We backed off 8.10. Moved to 8.0 instead. This allowed us to retain the OW Explorer (No retraining of users) and had very few DB changes.
Basically it moved us to a supported rls without much work.
Resources are extremely tight. ERP8.0 retires in June 2007
ERP8.12 is SUPPOSED to be released someime in 2006. This will have some (probably not all) of the Fusion base code. This is the only version that will have direct upgrade scripts to Fusion when it is released (right now, 2007 start with a full product line in 2008, but I think that will change).
By this time, 8.11 will be a mature product and we can decide if we want that, go with newer 8.12, or let our supportability lapse again and wait for 8.12 to become stable.
8.10 and lower will not have a direct path to Fusion. They will all require multiple upgrades via 8.12 to get to Fusion.
I hear 8.11 will be the only version with a scipt to 8.12, so anything < 8.11 will have to get to 8.11 first, then 8.12, then Fusion.
This is of course in a state of flux, so anything can chage.
