Is there any benefit to upgrade my ArcServe 2000 software to Brightstor? What are the differences if any?

Excellent question! I to have wondered if the benfits out weigh any drawbacks. When we upgraded from 6.61 to 2000 we encountered a number of problems and issues that took quite awhile to work thru. I'm leery the same would be true with Brightstor. csconner

Jim,

Thank you for the link to your documentation. I will review it. What I was looking for was more user perspective. I was hoping to hear some feedback from folks that had upgraded from Arcserve2000 to Brightstor.

Currently I backup approximately 35 servers (combination of Win2000, WIN NT and Netware systems, with you name it: SQL, Oracle, Notes, etc..). I find Arcserve 2000 requires considerable attention (care and feeding) to keep it performing consistently. I also find that consistency of backups is highly variable with respect to communications to the various agents working one day and not the next. I am in contact with CA Tech support often to assist me in resolving issues.

So what I'm looking for is some real world experience with Brightstor to help me determine if I should give Brightstor some consideration or if I should begin looking at competing products.

If you’d like to contact me I’d be happy to speak with you regarding this topic. We are a significant business partner with CA and have global reach within our service delivery offerings.

Yes, I would like some input from a user perspective as well. What operation changes...any hardware compatability issues.... new features...etc

We have used previous versions of ArcServe (6.5), and are currently using BrightStor Enterprise Backup with a tape library.

In my opinion BrightStor needs about as much attention as ArcServe. For example, a backup job may work fine for many days, then it gets file access errors (status Incomplete). After applying a filter, it runs again for a while. Library handling is not fully automatic, especially inventory. Error messages do not always reflect the cause of a problem, only that there is something wrong. We have discovered several bugs. As in ArcServe, client agents occasionally stop responding; restarting the client service brings it back. The internal security and backup domain concepts need improvement and/or utilities.

BrightStor is much easier to install and setup than some competing products, and the menus are easy to use. Documentation does not always match the software, and could use more detail.

Some of the problems reported in these forums under ArcServe also apply to BrightStor (the same is true for CA support sites). These forums (which I only found a few weeks ago!) have been very useful in diagnosing and correcting problems.

After working with other (more expensive) products that require virtually no attention after installation / configuration, other than monitoring status, this product is somewhat disappointing.
