Hi all,

I am new to this and got this link thro' google when I was wandering in the cyber pool for some help regarding upgrading the server!!!

I am an Avaya consultant and recently been hired by an organization for upgrading their servers, but for the first time I am stuck in a situation where the customer has upgraded their S8500 prior to upgrading their S8300/g350!! And if there is any adverse effect out of it, can any one pls let me know how to make it better??? We are still waiting on license for S8300 from Avaya, so still has not started the upgrade yet!! Does upgrade of main server really affect or is there a way to make the upgrade successful without downgrade the main server(S8500) and starting from the scratch???

Hoping to get an earliest response so I wont get stuck in the middle of the upgrade!!!

Best regards,
Sathya.

Is the S8300/G350 an LSP (Local Survivable Processor)? If so, upgrading the main server (S8500) without upgrading the LSP server (S8300) could result in translations not synchonizing between servers. This would only be service affecting if the remote site with the LSP lost connectivity to the main site. When the system went into LSP mode, it would not have the latest translations, only the translations it had at the time of the last sync before the S8500 was upgraded. The license file for the LSP (S8300) should be available on the same SID as the main server.

However, if the S8300/G350 is a stand-alone system and is only DCS networked back to the S8500, none of the above applies and you are fine with software load mis-matches between DCS-networked systems.

Thanks for the tips!!! S8300 is acting as LSP, and the master server is S8500! And on S8500 not able to get into sat terminal thro' telnet!!! Do you have any idea on this and how do I sync with S8500 after upgrading S8300 so the new installation takes effect in this case???
Is there any knowledge base I can go thro'??

Best regards,
Sathya.

You should be able to establish a telnet session to each sever, login, and use either the "sat" or "autosat" command at the Linux prompt to enter the Communication Manager software. The terminal type you need to use is "w2ktt". After the S8300 has been upgraded to the same load as the S8500, the translations will sync automatically during the next maintenance cycle. Or, from the command prompt in the Communication Manager sofware, you can type "save translations lsp". From the Linux command prompt, it is "filesync -a". To check the last time translations where saved, use the "display lsp" command and on the far right it will indicate the last time translations synced up.

schned99,

just a little hint: to work with sat through telnet/ssh more comfortably, access it with the same avaya site administration or terranova that you're using for ordinary administration process. set up a new networked switch with the same ip address as you're using for gedi or terminal emulation but with port number 23. it will give you the same telnet session and from there you can use normal 513 or 4410 type terminal emulation with all function keys and so on.

The problem we are facing here is, we do not have ASA and trying to access admin terminal thro' a normal telnet session and once I enter the command "sat" in the linux command line, telnet page goes blank and takes a while, returns with a line "Unknown error!" and back to linux prompt!!!

I am guessing probably its a license issue since it often gives licensing error!! Pls let me know if you guys have a different thought!!!

Thanks!!!

I am going to sound like a prick but every Avaya Consultant should have ASA. If you don't, stop everything you are doing and go buy it. An Avaya Consultant without ASA is like an Contractor without a hammer, useless...

I understand what you are telling, but I have got good reason for not having it and waiting for the customer to buy it!!! So dont worry, you are not a prick!! But really would appreciate any help if you can offer here to find out whats going on in the system!!

Thanks!!

Thanks dwalin. Good tip.

sathya1712,

It sounds like you have a software problem which may need to be addressed by Avaya. One other thing you can try is to access the Communication Manager through the web browser. Open an Interenet Explorer window and type in the address of the S8300. Login with the same login and password you used to telnet to Linux. Under Administration, click on Launch Native Configuration Manager. A java applet should spawn that will give you an administration screen. It takes a while to load, and is a little clunky, but it should do the trick until you get the SAT command repaired or get a copy of ASA.

Thanks schned99!!

Yes, I have tried it in S8300 and it works, but we are having problems with S8500 which is Primary!! Here I do not have anything standard, neither the server nor the upgrade CD!! Just kidding!! Some one did it half and left without any documentation, so all these problems!! But I really appreciate you guys' help!!!!

Best regards!!

To access any S8xxx server from anywhere you have network connectivity with no software on the PC required do the following:

open a dos prompt

telnet (ip address of server) 5023 (space between address and 5023), 5023 is the port for a SAT session.
login
password
term emulator = w2ktt

This will give you a SAT session from anywhere on your nework no software required. Look at the bottom for command formats. If you can not do this look at the security settings through the 8xxx web interface, and make sure telnet is enabled.

Hey Pat,

Thanks for your inputs!! Telnet port is open and it is ticked in security in the web interface!! And I tried the command you gave, but I am not able to telnet with that port and I can telnet without mentioning the port number!!!!

Is it possible that port 5023 is blocked on your network? Is it possible that port 5023 somehow got disabled on the built-in firewall on the S8500?

Well that can be a possibility, but as maybe most of us would have had bad experience with their local Networking guys!! So I am, just wanting to make sure we are fine from our end before approaching them to check on the network port!! How do I check for if the port 5023 is disabled on S8500 and how do I enable it??

You will open Internet Explorer, put in the IP address for the S8500, log in with your login/password, click on "Launch Maintenance Web Interface", use the left scroll bar to scroll down to the "Security" section, click on "Firewall", the first page that comes up will have check boxes for "input to server" and "output from server", find the entry for "def-sat" Service "5023/tcp" Port/Protocol, make sure there is a checkmark in each box for that entry.

Guys, thanks a lot for your help!! I am here sharing the info I got from Avaya itself!
- S8500 will not have port 5023 and here it is acting as an SES and I am sorry that I was under the impression that s8300 as an LSP, I came here in the middle and everything was messed up and no documentation!! S8300 is acting as ICC!!

Thanks again!
Sathya
