updating to 5300-07 Service Pack 3 1

I am updating to 5300-07 Service Pack 3 from 5300-05-01 and was wondering how long the update could possibly take. the download is about 2GB in size.

It depends on how fast your disk IO is and maybe if you are doing it through the network (NIM) then it depends on how fast your network is as well!

I would suggest you first do it on test server and note down the time before going live!

I am doing it on a development box and only have a 4hr window to get it done. I am not doing it from the network.

IMHO never tried it but i think it should be fine!

Worst comes to worst you can just apply it instead of commit and then see how it goes! you can always rollback!

We did several updates from 5300-05-CSP to 5300-08-01 over network and it usually took us about 30 - 40 minutes per machine.

The download packages also contain more filesets than you need because one never has all available AIX filesets installed.

It should be no problem to go from 05 to 07. Only thing that's important is to make sure you got the correct update package. Usually you can choose your originating package level and the download will contain everything you need to go to the desired level ... Alternatively you can choose from NO LEVEL to TL07SP03 as the safest way to make sure you get everything you need ...

You can also try with alt_disk_copy.

I agree with alt_disk_copy. You can update your system on the fly and "activate" your updated OS with a reboot. This also allows a simple back-out plan as all you need to do is reboot back to the original drives.

This will only work, however, if your rootvg doesn't have active application data/databases on it. As this normally isn't the case though...

I applied 5300-07 TL and it said failed when completed. I then ran lppchk and it mentions the following.


lppchk: The following filesets need to be installed or corrected to bring
the system to a consistent state:

csm.core 1.7.0.0 (not installed; requisite fileset)

How would I correct this so the update completes successfully.

You might want to consider looking at multibos too, as an alternative to alt_disk_install.

Multibos is now my preferred method for upgrading AIX, although it does require you have sufficient space in your rootvg.
