Hi guys,

I have a refurbished 2950 that I'm trying to update the IOS on before I program it and put it in production.

I've googled the heck out of this question and haven't found an answer. I found other answers but they currently don't work with my current plan. Granted I may have to change the plan which will be a major inconvenience.

Is it possible to install the up to date IOS using the console port? If not how can I do the update without connecting it to the network?

Thanks.

On the bench:
Console in and assign an IP address to the switch
Assign a static IP address to your computer (same subnet)
Plug computer into the switch
Upgrade IOS
Program the switch
Conenct to the network

Alright. Thanks you guys for the help so far. I've decided to currently forget from trying to load from the console port since the run time is over 2 hrs. I've wasted more than that already though.

I'm currently pulling whats left of my hair out. For whatever reason that I can't find - I can't telnet to the switch. I get my motd banner and that's it. No login available. Pressing any key does nothing.

Mind taking a look as to what I screwed up?
I've changed a few things just for security purposes but the data is basically the same. Also I copied the configuration of an existing switch that is working properly. I may have missed something another set of experienced eyes could possibly catch.

Thanks for the help. I inserted a question at near the top of the log about double passwords just in case you missed it.

you have your login password which is what you use when you telnet in and then you have your enable secret password which lets you into global config mode and allows you to configure your switch.

add
aaa new model
aaa authentication login default local
aaa authentication enable default enable

Vipergg, thanks for the reply. After I typed this I had a "doh" moment about the password. I was so frustrated about the telnet problem since I had been looking at it so long I completely over looked it. Thanks.

As for the telnet issue and your new lines - it may be due to the IOS version of my switch. (C2950-I6Q4L2-M), Version 12.1(20)EA1a, RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1). I was able to add all lines to the switch except for line - aaa new model.

Still can't log in through telnet. Any other ideas?

My son's shirt says my daddy can fix anything. Now that's a lot to live up to.

printed out the config. it added the line
aaa new-model
aaa authentication login default local
aaa authentication enable default enable

when it wouldn't accept it the first time I typed it in as aaa new <CR>

Still can't telnet in. Time to crack open some more books.

I'm going to end this thread and create a new since the problem has changed.
