Hello I have done the mute, up, down, up, down, mute, 9, goodbye to enter in the admin pwr(color*set) and now I am at the screen that displays:

EAP Mode: Disabled

ID1:

ID2:

Password: ****

Enable VPN:

Protocol : Avaya VPN
... etc.

I would like to know what is the next step for updating firmware using a tftp server that I installed on my PC (Solarwinds). Can anyone help please (if anyone has done this can you explain the step by step process?)

Hello and welcome to the forum, i faced a similair situation as yours a few weeks ago.

Method as follows.

to upgrade an 1140e to the latest unistim firmware

1. place the following '1140e.cfg' text file along with the required firmware downloaded from avaya in your TFTP root directory (i.e. the directory that the tftp server will go to to look for the files that a client will search for using TFTP)

DOWNLOAD_MODE FORCED
VERSION 0625C8A
FILENAME 0625C8A.bin
PROTOCOL TFTP
SERVER_IP 192.168.1.3
SECURITY_MODE 0

change the SERVER_IP to whatever the TFTP server ip address is

also, make sure that the file name is 1140e.cfg NOT 1140e.cfg.txt as windows notepad would save it. If required manually edit the file name using the windows command line.

2. download the firmware from avaya and install into TFTP root

3. connect you phone to the network, and in the phones admin menu ( the one that you accessed earlier )program the 'Provisioning Server' ip address to that of your TFTP server.

4. Press the ok/reboot button and see what happens!

5. If all goes well it should grab the new firmware file and write it to memmory.

Good luck, and if you need any further assistance please post here and i will try to help

Thanks, can this be done using a POE switch or do I have to use a BCM?

Ok so I tried everything as you said and I am getting an IP address conflict message. Did you ever come across this message

so the phones IP address is the same as an existing IP address on the network :S

do you have a step by step on how to this using BCM element manager by chance?

why don't you set the phone to DHCP so it will automatically find an open IP address on your system?

have you updated the firmware on an 1140e phone using a POE switch before?

Well in my system, the POE switch is just a static device that routes the internet to my phones and provides power to my phones.

There are 2 ways to update your firmware. Get the latest patches for the BCM and that will include the updated firmware.

Set your phone's provisioning server to that of the BCM and the phone should upload the latest firmware once connected to the BCM.

2nd way is to follow Pablo 100's advice above and download a TFTP server such as "Pumpkin" and link your phone to that server.

Create the config file exactly as shown above. Make sure you load the latest free firmware from Avaya's download site and then make sure the latest firmware names are written in you code in the Version and Filename section.

Here is an example of mine....

create a new folder on your desktop named:

Unistim Firmware
Then create a notepad entry named 1140eSIP.cfg
In the entry type:

[FW]
DOWNLOAD_MODE FORCED
VERSION 0625C8L
FILENAME 0625C8L.bin

In the same folder, load the firmware which will have a name similar to this:
0625C8L.bin

Load these up to the TFTP server,

Set your phone to the address of the desktop or laptop that the TFTP server sits on.

Reboot the phone, let the phone read the files and the newest version of firmware should upload along with the cool blue light on the phone flashing.

Let me know if any of that works...

on the pumpkin tftp server do I have to click the put tab before setting the phone to the IP address of the tftp server?

and can i try this from home using a bell router?

would you happen to know the "Registration Password"?

I am getting The registratration password when I plug in the
- It loads
- It displays big avaya logo
- Then it displays small avaya logo
- The it says "waiting for cfg data..."

- then it brings me to a page that says :
NEW SET
Registration Password
PW:(where I have to enter the passsword)

- I am not on BCM I am running this test on a regular PC with a 16 port Netgear POE switch.

Maybe this info will give you a clearer picture

JT, This phone has to be routing to a BCM in your network somewhere.....otherwise you'd get the 'Server Unreachable' message each time the phone tries to log in. Instead, the phone is looking up a BCM somewhere....Can you get to that BCM's element manager and turn off the Global Registration Password? You need to answer that question for me before we proceed further.
