I am wanting to be able to push out administrative updates for win 2k and other apps. How can I package something like a critical update to push out to my end users when they log on? All updates and installs have to be administrativly done

Why don't you use software update services or get sms the new 2003 version rocks.

Yes it is. I will run on 2003 and 2000...We use it on a 2000 server and it's been working great.

They are also going to be updating it to Windows Update Services later this year. It will be nice because they are adding the ability to do all windows updates as well as office and later even third party programs.

do users need local admin privileges to get updates?

No, If they have admin privleges then it will ask them if they want to install. If you want to automatically do it it's good if they don't. It will download the updates during the day and install them at night. I have it set to download anytime and install at 4am. I have told all my users to restart at night instead of shutting down so they get the updates at night. This has been the most effective trouble free way so far. If they have admin right it will still function this way but it will let the user know updates are ready to install and give them the option to do it. I prefer to be in control:)

Hope this helps.

thanks for your help y'all. I am eventually going to start using the update service.. I am wanting to have the updates install when they log on in the morning. The people here dont listen to a thing if it is going to break their routine. You absolutly have to have an administrators id/password to install anything on our machines.. Keeps em form installing stuff that will crash them.

In that case, I would recommend setting an install time for something like 4am, as mentioned above. If the system is still on at 4am, the install starts. If it is turned off, you can configure it to install on the first boot after 4am.

SUS is definitely the way to go. Also, keep in mind that MS releases their OS patches on the second Tuesday of every month. Be sure to go into SUS the next morning (or that night) and approve any of the pending updates.

Make sure an test though if possible. MS has been known to let go of some pretty bad patches. Might save you some trouble.
