Hi

I would like to update Office 2000 which is installed on a few machines on a LAN.

The main point being to patch the security vulnerabilities in Outlook.

Currently the version of Office is SR-1.

According to MS, Office SP3 goes right on top of SR-1 - this is not confirmed by my experience - "The expected version of the product was not found on the system". I have also downloaded the individual updates, of which outlctlx.exe (View Control security update) and o2kiefrm.exe (Java permissions security update) install ok.

out2ksec.exe (Extended E-mail Security) doesn't install - it is supposed to go on top of SR-1/a as well, but it quits with "Microsoft Office 2000 Premium is not at the SR-1 level" which is not true - Office SR-1 is installed and is the only version of Office on the machine i'm using just now.

These messages seem to point to the fact that Office is not detected as SR-1. Also when I re-installed Office 2000, it would not let me update it to the SR-1 level again - "Error applying patch to file: c:\Config.msi\somefilename.tmp. It has probably been updated by other means, and can no longer be modified by this patch. For more information contact your patch vendor.".

Its probably worth mentioning that I deleted Config.msi to create disk space as the files were all .tmp.

I am also getting the same messages on another machine, although I haven't re-installed yet...

Anyone got a clue whats up here?

On another, virgin, machine exactly the same things happen - Office SP3 won't install on top of a clean install of Office SR-1. I also get the same "Error applying patch to file: c:\Config.msi\somefilename.tmp" error when trying to reinstall SR-1a.

C:\Config.msi does not in fact exist on this one, but I didn't delete it...

I am wondering if there is a better way to do this - does Win2k SP3 or SP4 contain the security updates I need?

to get around this create a folder called Config.msi and allow the everyone group full access to the folder. This should solve your problems
