updates for win. 98???

real stupid question . i use plain ole windows 98...after using winme i prefer it. question...does the windows updates provide all the needed updates for this os?? or, do i need to look at specific updates like service packs, etc.?? and download these files manually. some day i expect to get win 2000 or xp.. any opinion on which i would be better off with? mainly just game ( quake) online. thanks guys, dog

Win 98 second edition is just perfect.
Also dual screen and FAT32 for best performance
for all MMX applics.

Just use the newer versions for your needs like :
Internet explorer 5.5 or higher,
DX8 o.h.
Direct Media 7 o.h.

will list all updates for 98 or ME, whatever it is you have when you connect, it autodetects that. The solution is out there.

ok thanks...guess i didnt make my question clear enuff. i do update via windows update site. my question is..is that enough for windows 98. ( not 98se btw ). i havnt installed any service packs for win 98 or dun update,etc. i have got ie 6, directx 8.1. thanks again dog

Howdy:

That's all you have to do.. If there were service packs available, they would be listed in the Critical or Recommended updates area of Windows Update. It would be up to you to install them.

There was a Service Pack 1 for Windows 98 [first version] but not for Window 98 Second Edition. Here is a couple of links about it:

I have it on a CD I purchased from Microsoft. It has security fixes and Y2K bug fixes that are no longer available from Microsoft. Please come back and let us know if your

ok guys , thanks for ALL your replys.i just downloaded and installed the win 98 customer service pack 1. guess i needed it,[?] hehe. what i find odd is this...it just dont show up with the standard windows 98 update downloads ( u know, after it scans my software ) so i was hesitant to try it. guess i just need to fork out some bucks and upgrade to xp. kinda slow to change. dog
