Have Explorer 6.0.29
Went to open a open a pdf from a web site and Adobe upgrade window popped up.
Downloaded and installed the update, (believe it was Adobe Acrobat Reader 6.0.3).

Im able to view pdfs' from sites, but once I close the pdf, Explorer shuts down.

I recieve a dialogue box saying the problem is:

Adobe Acrobat Control for ActiveX
ActiveX control
pdf.ocx

Click on details and apparently have 3 options for the ActiveX. (Manage Add-ons)
Can enable
disable
or update.
Update doesnt work ?

Selecting Disable,(then restart),open explorer, try to view a pdf, Adobe window opens, but then hangs with blank screen.

Enable it again,(and restart),open explorer, view a pdf, close the pdf,
Explorer shuts down with same dialouge box.

Have searched around and followed links but found nothing that pertains to my problem. There is a extmgr.dll available. But says to only use that for the hanging blank screen, and if the pdf.ocx is not listed in the manage add-ons list to enable or disable. And specifies ONLY for that symptom.
Apparently still needs some more testing LOL !

Should I try it anyways ??

I had the same problem and this fixed it for me...

or Repair AR6.0.3

Download the update from
and run it. It should give an option to Repair or Uninstall AR6.

If you're thinking of installing AR7, I'd recommend removing AR6 first. AR7 loads far more quickly than AR7 and IMHO integrates better with IE6.

Thank you all very much for the very quick replies.
Sorry I didnt get back earlier to respond. Got called away.

Upgrading to Reader7 appears to have solved the problem.

Kinda baffling that the auto update would give me 6.0.3.
Which in turn then caused problems.
Then auto update wouldnt offer 7. Had to find and update manually.
Very strange way for them to be running things. Am sure though that they have there reasons, no matter how ludicrous they may sound. LOL.

Anyways
Thanx gain !
Much appreciated !!
