Update look-up table

I have a problem. I need to number two forms sequentially and get the information into two tables. I can create a look-up table and use the Max+1 to pull the number from but how do I get it updated?
The forms in question are frmNonConformance and frmImprovement which are linked to tblNonConformance and tblImprovement. If you enter the first number "1" in frmNonConformance then when you make an entry in frmImprovement it should show "2" or the reverse if you enter into frmImprovement first.
Hope I have made myself clear.
Any help would be appreciated.

How many users ?

How many entries ?

Ie. Whats the chance of two people making entries at the same time and getting the wrong ( duplicate ) number from the Index table ?
