i just reinstalled my os. the view when scrolling is extremely wavy. i have tried adjusting some settings in control panel but am not hitting on anything.

i think maybe i should try to update my driver. it's a compaq monitor. i am not sure the best way to identify what driver i need. any help tyvm.

i have a couple of questions maybe somebody can help me with. when i go to they offer basically two links to submit for the driver. one is an whql option(i looked at the link linney posted about whql) but don't know if i am to use a driver from that area or the other link that doesn't specify whql. my guess is the second one.

my chipname has (420,430) in it. the drivers i see listed are all 420 with no mention of 430. that confuses me also.

last thing is this. basically there are 4 downloads offered for a specific date. if you go to you would see what i mean. choices are for example:
139421No IShld.zip
139421Rotation.zip
139421TvLargeFont.zip
139421Util.zip
sorry to be a pain. tyvm.

hi folks,

are we sure this isn't just a refresh rate issue?

hi occas,

right click on desktop goto properties

select settings tab

click on advanced button

select monitor tab

change refresh rate settings here - check what settings your monitor on first

the refresh rate is 60 hertz. not sure what to change to as there are no options.
also, i am guessing i still need to update those drivers.
tyvm.

there is list all modes button on the same page! find options there

unchecking leads to a warning that the setting cannot be displayed correctly and could cause hardware damage. the word that scares me is "cannot" not "may not". ??

according to your link jamie, the refresh should be 75 hz. i am curious how it got at 60 with no other settings being recommended. but thanks very much.

did it work?

interested to know now!

the screen went crazy. the box with the advanced setting finally came back up and with 60 hertz again. and right now there is some kind of install going on with a "reading package".

Most LCD monitors cannot accept a refresh rate higher than 60HZ.
Not all, but most.

scared the crap out of me. i can tell you that.

From your site link, I suppose running this program just confused the issue more?

"THIRD: Know your S3 graphics chip.
Try Windows utility WinS3ID.EXE to help identify the chip on your board or system. Right click and "Save Target As" to your desktop. Double-click on the WinS3ID desktop icon. (If your legacy device was made before 1999, you may need to use the DOS utility S3ID.EXE and run in DOS or from a Windows command prompt.) Write down the chip number and chip name for later reference."

I am not familiar with your equipment, I wonder if you have to download all 4 zip files offered? Maybe they broke them up into 4 zipped downloads for ease of downloading, like I said though, I am not familiar with your drivers.

i appreciate the help linney. if figure if you can't figure it out, i am up the creek. i guess i could try downloading all 4 of them and see what happens.

thought i would post this. i did download all 4 of those files but ended up just guessing to try the util one. it installed and i went to the good doctor and it shows that driver as being correct. i feel like a banty rooster right now. just kidding.

is this a fair question now. i have been having trouble at start up. that is why i reinstalled the os. it still is just as slow. seeing as how my system seems to be hanging at the "detecting ide drivers" and the fact that the doctor shows the ide ata/atapi drivers need updated, could there be a connection?
thanks for all the great help people.

concerning drivershq.com. it showed me needing the s3 graphic driver that i somehow found and updated. and drivershq reflected that.

as far as my other 2 drivers that the doctor says i need. i go directly to the via.com site. and download the 4in1 file there. so i am pretty sure i am getting what i should be.

the drivershq site still has me as needing those drivers updated. is there a chance that the drivershq can be in error?

sorry for all the ??. thanks ahead of time.

You have only used 1 out of 4 zip files you downloaded. Are you game to try any or all of the remaining ones to see what happens? Make sure you are downloading and installing the correct 4 in 1 drivers.

You could also try the Windows Update site and see if that flags anything about driver updates as your setup has changed over the course of these posts.

"vinylAC'97 appears under sound video and game controllers as AvanceAC'97 for VIA (R) Audio Controller."

When the "AC97" drivers show up, usually this means that the ONBOARD drivers are turned on in BIOS. Check BIOS on bootup and be sure they are turned off if you don't need them.

i have gone to via's site and viaarena.com also. i have downloaded the 4in1 driver that allows you to install all 4 in one shot. i have used version 443 and 451. both result in drivershq.com showing those drivers needing updated. that's why i question drivershq on this. i even tried the miniport driver. according to hoyle, they should be the correct drivers.

but i may get brave and try installing from one of the remaining 3 of those drivers i had downloaded individually.

once again, could that drivershq be off? is there another tool that does the same thing for a comparison?

and i will do another windows update.

thanks to all.
