i just reinstalled my os. the view when scrolling is extremely wavy. i have tried adjusting some settings in control panel but am not hitting on anything.

i think maybe i should try to update my driver. it's a compaq monitor. i am not sure the best way to identify what driver i need. any help tyvm.

Head to the Windows Update site.
After applying everything missing from your new install, test again.

i wonder if this could be a memory thing. i ran a defrag and still the same.

total physical memory 512 mb
available memory 141 mb
total virtual memory 1.56 gb
available virtual memory 941 mb
page file space 1.10 gb

i just did a reinstall of xp. didn't have this prior. when scrolling even horizontally in my db it has a "wave" effect.

thanks bcastner. here's my problem with that. i have a compaq presario monitor(mv400). i have been searching my buns off for a driver. this monitor is an old one and the system i have is just over a year. the doggone thing worked fine until i reinstalled.
tyvm bcastner.

to try to be clearer. the driver at compaq.com specifies a win98 os. not sure how to proceed.

I was more worried about the video adapter. The COMPAQ MV400 is essentially a "plug and play" device under XP, but your video adapter is not.

Look in Device Manager and see if you can identify the chipset manufacturer for the video. Go to the chipset manufacturer's site and download new drivers.

i did this. under sound video and game controllers:
legacy video capture devices - manu: std.system device
media control devices - manu: std.system device
standard game port - manufacturer: std.system device
video coders - manu:std.system device
mpu-401 compatible MIDI devices manu:microsoft
vinylAC'97 Codec Combo Devices(WDM) manu:VIA Technologies

i found a driver for the last one, but i may have screwed up. now that vinylAC'97 appears under sound video and game controllers as AvanceAC'97 for VIA (R) Audio Controller.

many moons ago, i had trouble and found a site that "diagnoses" the drivers your system needs. i still have the list of drivers i needed at the time. one was s3 graphics prosavageDDR. it's still on my desktop. when i tried updating that driver, i wanted to specify the location because it is on my desktop. it went ahead and updated the driver with a file from windows/system.

i have not tried the safe mode. should i be looking for something in particular?

don't know if this helps. under display, settings, advanced, adapter. all information is <unavailable>.
clicking on properties yields vgaSave. type : non-plug and play drivers. manufacturer and location are unknown.

The graphics depend on both the monitor and the video adapter.

Although the monitor driver may be fine, your video adapter may not be curremt. What graphics card are you using?

The video aspect of 'Sound, video, and game controllers' refer to video codecs. but isn't influenced by the video hardware. Look under the 'Display adapter' section for the driver info for your graphics card.

<marc> i wonder what will happen if i press this...[ul][li]please tell us if our suggestion has helped[/li][li]need some help? faq581-3339[/li][/ul]

thanks for the driver detective. lol, it shows i need the same drivers i did months ago. now 3 of the 4, i can see in device manager. but nowhere can i find an s3 graphics prosavageDDR. as i said earlier, display, settings, advanced, adapter shows nothing of s3 graphics prosavageDDR. i'd sure like to know where the good driver detective found that guy at.

occas: 'shows nothing of s3 graphics prosavageDDR'
er, pray tell - what does it show?

The more you tell us, the better an answer we can give :)

My guess if that it's a video adapter issue...

okay. when i go to display,settings, advanced,adapter:
adapter type shows nothing.
*chip type<unavailable>
*dac type<unavailable>
*memory size<unavailable>
*adapter string<unavailable>
*bios information<unavailable>

then clicking on properties:
general tab:
VgaSave
Device type : Non-plug and play drivers
Manufacturer: Unknown
Location: Unknown
driver tab:
VgaSave
Service name:VgaSave
Display name:VgaSave
Current status : started
Startup type : system

hope that helps. thanks.

The reason I suggested Safe Mode was just to check (early in to this post) that it wasn't a Monitor fault causing this problem. You could still do this if you like.

However, what you have now, from your latest post is no video adapter installed whatsoever. You are in fact displaying output from the Safe Mode video display controller VGA.Sys.

Find the correct driver for your video adapter. I wonder why your machine is not flagging new hardware if your intended video card is installed (correctly?).

Is the Plug and Play Service started and running on Automatic?

well, i downloaded what i thought was one driver that needed updating, according to the driver doctor. it was a 4in1 from VIA. when i rebooted, yes , new hardware identified. my display adapter now shows an s3 graphics prosavageDDR.

when i went back to the doctor, it still shows the same drivers needing updated. including the s3 graphics one.

may i ask what xp whql is? when i go to s3 graphics site, it is referenced. basically it looks like there are two url's to obtain the download. one for xp whql but not sure of what that is.
