When ever I am logged a new browser page keeps launching itself. I've never been to this web site but can not stop it launching. I have blocked it to stop anything being displayed but I want to stop the page launching. Any ideas??

yeah, sounds like gator or something like that. Tek-Tips has no popups that I know of. (other than the join thing at the entrance)
AdAware is reccommended from me as well.

Hmmm. Same web site each time? (Not one of those you'd want your boss to see popping up?) Could be a virus, of sorts. You might check this out:

Or the others could be right on with the Gator/other scum-ware solutions. Adaware is a fine tool. Post back if still no luck...

I have downloaded and run this software. It found quite a lot that shouldn't be there. I've deleted it all and it seems to have worked. If it starts agian I may add further comments.

Thank you all for you advice

I have had the same problem. I ran ad-aware and found some stuff like gator but the pop-ups are still there. I have looked through my c drive and also found some stuff that I deleted but still the pop ups keep coming and of course its stuff that I dont want to be there.

Thanks for your input people but it has not worked. Adware has picked up quite a lot of stuff but this particular web site still keeps poping up. I have Nortons Firewall, can I use this to block this web address?

You could use IE to block the web address but Norton's is just as good

I had solved the problem on my PC!!
I dont know if this will work for your pc but you can try.
By the way I am using windows 2000 so you have to take that into consideration.
I started off in safe mode. When in safe mode I went into windows explorer and went to folder options. In folder options I checked the "show hidden files and folders" button. Then I went to the "C" Drive and went to "documents and settings" and went into my user name, local settings and temporary internet files and cleared out all the files in those folders. The file that was causing all the pop ups was residing in my temporary internet files folder. This may or may not work for you but its worth a shot.

If you're still stumped and having not a lick of luck, please post the site that keeps popping up. This might cue us in as to a fix. There are actually viruses out there that raise only certain sites.

I have the exact same problem. The popup comes up randomly, I'd say 20% of every page I visit. It puts up a webpage from the following sites:

x11.burstabit.com
x12.burstabit.com
z11.gattler.com
z12.gattler.com

It's quite annoying.

Silmeron,

It's becoming more and more acknowledged that AdAware is a weak option due to lack of updating. Try downloading SpyBot Search and Destroy and running it to eliminate the possibility that you've got a hijacker or piece of scumware on your machine. SpyBot will find anything amiss and allow you to kill it...quite easy to use.

Check your browser settings.
Possibly this can be alleviated by removing the site from your "Home Page" designation and replacing with the site of your choosing.

Assuming that you are running Windows....
If this does not work, fire up Regedit (Win95,98,ME) or Regedt32 (NT,2K)from the Start -> Run box.
Click on Edit, then find/search. Make sure the search encompasses Keys, Values, and Data.
Type in a string (ex. if offending website is enter "spyware" no quotes.)
If you are unfamiliar with the Windoze registry, do not change anything!

Let us know what happens.
If items are found in the search, please advise those as well.

Rgds

Thanks guys for the help. I think SpyBot took care of the problem. I noticed that "FriendlyGreetings" had been installed on the system at some point. That may have been the source of all evil. A cleaning of C:\Program Files\Common Files\Media, reboot, and now it doesn't seem to happen anymore.

I had several other things in there as well that it might have been, but this one was most suspicious, as it was actually running an executable.

The strange part is, I don't ever recall seeing it in "Run" in the Registry. Odd.

Thanks again though! Spybot is a nice tool :)

Silmeron, et al.

FYI...I've a FAQ posted in the Windows95/98 Forum FAQ area re: the FriendGreeting "virus." FAQ615-2864
You must be running an OS other than 9x, or you would have really been vexed...on 9x OS this little booger makes your minimized windows not show up on your toolbar, though they're still there (Alt+Shift will show them).

Anyway...enjoy SpyBot and pass it along....glad your problem's fixed
