Hello. I'm hoping someone can assist me. I am new to web development and design. I have had a difficult time with a Fireworks menu that I'm importing into a Dreamweaver document.

The problem is that I have a transparent background for the menu and when I import it into Dreamweaver I see white spots around the Veranda 12pt. My understanding is that this is a halo effect.

Because of the transparent background I saved the menu slices as .gif. Is there another format I should be using?

Is the only solution to use Photoshop to remove the halo? If so, is there an easy way of doing this? Or do I need to brushup pixel by pixel.

Thank you for your help.

John

Have you made sure that you selected a transparency for your .gif file? I know that I have made files with transparent backgrounds before and failed to select a transparency for my image. You can do all of this in Fireworks.

I often use the export wizard and set my properties there while being able to control image size and such.

Are you creating text on a transparent background? Whether you use Fireworks or Photoshop, there are two areas you could look at.

1: Turn off anti-aliasing. This is one of the options in the properties palette in both programs.

2: If you want anti-aliasing, for smoother looking text, you need to specify a matte. If you were using a file format that supported alpha transparency (where pixels can be semi-transparent), such as PNG, then this would be unneccessary, but with GIF, you only have one level of transparency. This means it is difficult to make text appear smooth at the edges. Fireworks & Photoshop cheat by fading the edge pixels to another colour (white by default) so that if it is placed on a white background, it looks smooth. If your background is a different colour, you have to tell either program what that colour is. Change the Matte in the Optimize palette in Fireworks, or the Save For Web dialog in Photoshop.

Thank you for your replies. I confirmed the background is transparent so I will focus on the Matte option. Thanks again.
