I somehow got the folder tasks menu(Like in folders, on the left) to show on the desktop. How do I get rid of it?
Thanks!

If you mean the taskbar that is normally at the bottom of the screen...

Right click in the Taskbar to make sure "Lock the Taskbar" is not checked.

Move the cursor over it, left click... and while holding the left button down, drag the Taskbar toward the bottom of the screen.

When done, right click in the Taskbar and check "Lock the Taskbar" so it doesn't happen again.

right-click a blank area of the desktop, hover the mouse of 'arrange icons by' and be certain select by Groups is not enabled.

There are several possibilities here, but at least set your desktop to the default.

I should also note that malware can do this.

For detection and manual removal utilities, see faq6084650. I have been recommending in the last month running a trialware antispyware application to simplify things and let the application do the hard work. My current favorite is Giant antispyware:
Update the definitions and let it see if malware is an issue on your system.

Thanks linney. It seemed to me too a Common Tasks enabled issue, but there are some wacky things floating around at the moment.

I wish the site would host a small capability for screenshots.

thanks bcastner,

But it's not a spyware or virus thing really. (well, it is micro$oft)
It's more like the favorites sidebar in ie.
Except I have no control over it. I can't right click on it, so there's no properties. And no close button.

linney,

Thanks! I think that's the answer. We'll give it a try.
If that does it, there will be a star for you.

I'll keep you posted.

Thanks linney,

We tried the first one (from Doug Knox).

After a reboot the problem was gone.

You get a S T A R

Question; how did it get on there?

In Explorer, Tools, Folder Options, General tab, 'show common tasks in folders' (or access Folder Options through the Control Panel.

thanks bcastner.

I had looked through there, but I didn't know it was called "common tasks".
