I publish a school newspaper and yearbook. Both use PM 6.5 on Mac G4 with an OS 9.4. When we(I or my students) are inputing new text, occasionally the new text will disappear and be replaced with various symbols and numbers. A broad black line will also sometimes run down the page vertically. Neither the pointer tool or the text tool will recognize the symbols or line, thus we can't get rid of them. We try to delete them, and the symbols convert themselves to a long vertical line of symbols. We can't type over them. We've had to recreate page after page of documents. Plus, when we send the pages via zip to the publisher and printer of the documents, some of the files show up corrupted and they cannot be opened or fixed. We have completely reformatted one of the G4's and reinstalled PM, and we still have this problem. There is plenty of memory allotted to PM on both machines. Have had endless tech people out and all are baffled. Any clues?

Hi,

Do you have the same problem when you create a new publication?

Grillhouse: To answer your question, yes. We do have the same problems when we open a new publication. Today, one of the G4's refused to even open Pagemaker. It is displayed under Applications, but when I choose it, nothing happens. It acts like it's going to open, sort of a pause, and then it shuts down without going to PM toolbar.

Hi,

Seems like serious problems. I think that you have problems with with your OS. I had also some problems with OS 9.04. Upgrading to 9.1 sorted out these problems (the upgrade is free downloadable).
Upgrading to 9.1 or 9.2 has another inconvenient, if you get the notification that the application can not run due to type 2 or 3 errors, the only solution is to reinstall the applications.

Hello,
If you are running OS 9 do a search for the following items.
aldtmp
select all of them and move them to the trash. Then try to open Pagemaker. Sometimes these temp files can not only cause Pagemaker not to open but also give type errors.
Good luck
