Unusual Shared Printer Error Message 1

We have a small office network. We are using Windows 98 Second Edition on all computers and we are using the Windows 98 Network. We are connected through a combination DSL router/hub.

We share files and peripherals such as zip drives, San Disks and our hardrives. Until recently we also shared printers. One printer is a Brother Laser Jet operating off a HP computer and the other printer is a HP Desk Jest operating off of a Compaq computer. The printers suddenly stopped being able to print as shared printers.

These printers show up on the network and can be added as shared. The printers work fine off of the computer they are connected to , however when printing from any other network computer we get an "unkown system error" and will not print. The error message says to shut down the computer and re-boot Windows.

I have relaoded the printer drivers, replaced the network cable , captured the printer ports, run Norton diagnostics, changed the printer cables, and replaced printer cables with USB ( yes I end captured and re-captured printer ports) .

All other network functions work fine. We have not added any recent software or hardware.

I need help as what esle to check. What is different about networking printers ?

Remove the file and printer sharing from the computers and readd.

Sounds like a network driver library problem.

What protocols do you have set up on your network? I've had problems with computers not talking properly when they only have TCP/IP set up. It would always stop communicating when I go to access the internet with TCP/IP. I'd recommend having TCP/IP, IPX/SPX, and NetBEUI set up for each machine. That gives each machine, TCP/IP access to the net and IPX/SPX access to the lan. I don't know what NetBEUI does but I know it does something useful.

Hi,

I have the same problem and I think I solved it over the weekend. On the computer which hosts the printer go to the C:\windows\spool\printers directory. Delete all files with the extension .spl. Please let me know if this solves your problem.
