I am trying to determine if an 18GB internal disk on an rs6000 7043-150 is available for me to install AIX 5.1 to dual boot with 4.3 which is currently installed. The system also contains an internal 9GB disk and an external 18GB disk. When I go into smit "list contents of a physical volume" the 18GB internal disk that I want to install 5.1 on is not listed. When I manually type "hdisk1" in the "physical volume name" field and click OK smit responds that the physical volume is not assigned to a voulme group. Is it safe to say that the disk is not being used? How would I verify that the disk is not being used in a mirror with the other 18GB disk?

I would check the command
lspv
This will list the disk drives on the system and the volume group the disk belongs.
If a disk does not belong to a volume group it should not have any mirrored data.

Just for safety you could have import the disk in question via smit, verify it's contents, reexport and redefine it (after cfgmgr) if it's contents is not important. "Long live king Moshiach !"
