Hi,
Can someone please explain the difference between "Destination net unreachable" and "Request timed out", and what kind of info each message would provide to a person (hacker) doing a ping?
If the ping fails, the request timed out can mean that the destination host is down or that there is no route back to you. Destination Net Unreachable will show the IP address of the Router that tried to route the packet but did not have a valid route.
Hi
Thanks for the quick response. I was told that these 2 messages mean different things to someone who is scanning your network, and can provide important information to someone who is doing reconnaissance? Can you explain that?
its the same thing. if someone scanning your network gets an Destination net unreachable, that tell the 'tester' there is no way for him to reach that network. there is no 'other' information this provides a scanner. to help you out, google and download nmap and check that out.
