I'm running 2003 Standard R2. About an hour ago, I installed the windows updates that were released this week. Now I'm receiving very non-descript errors in the event log:

Date: 9/15/2006 Source: Application Error
Time: 12:20:41 PM Category: None
Type: Error Event ID: 1001
User: N/A
Computer: PELLAEON

Description:
Fault bucket 200107574.

Additionally, the AU notification says there are more updates available (the same one I just installed), but attempting to install the update results in another error:

Date: 9/15/2006 Source: Application Error
Time: 12:21:38 PM Category: (100)
Type: Error Event ID: 1000
User: N/A
Computer: PELLAEON

Description:
Faulting application svchost.exe, version 5.2.3790.1830, faulting module msi.dll, version 3.1.4000.2435, fault address 0x00012780.

After this second error, the system is no longer usable. Menus are clickable and work (including the Star Menu), but no applications will start. Task Manager cannot be started from Ctrl+Alt+Delete, nor can the Shut Down dialog be displayed.

Any advice or insight would be appreciated.

I was having the exact same issue you are having (that's how I came across this thread). What worked for me was to turn off automatic updates in system properties, reboot, then enable automatic updates.

Have you tried removing the updates that were installed?

After a little research, I discovered that the updates did not successfully apply, thus nothing to remove, supposedly.

What worked for me was to turn off automatic updates in system properties, reboot, then enable automatic updates.

I ended up trying a variation of this with success: I installed them manually instead of through AU - this seems to have resolved the problem and the system is now stable.
