Has anyone ever seen DNS on WIN 2000 SP4 go unresponsive? One of our DCs will randomly go unresoponsive - - no dns queries will be responded to - - whether you test with a local name or an internet name. A restart of the DNS service solves the problem.

Ideas?

Are there any entries in the event log regarding the DNS service? You may want to start there.

Should have said that... DNS Event log is spotless.

Did you check the System log for any events related to Netlogon, Service Control Manager, etc.

Yeah, there should be something hidden away in the event logs.

You may also want to try the DNS logging as well.
Open up the DNS MMC console and connect to your DNS server. Right-click on the server you wish to configure and select Properties, then choose the Debug Logging tab. Here you can choose to enable or disable DNS debug logging, select the actions you would like logged and specify where to write the log files too.

(FYI the logs are not in real time!)

Also, it maybe worth taking a peek at DCDiag and Netdiag to see if they show up anything.

Thanks,

Steve.
