Getting this error on a Netware 4.11 server regularly:
"AFP-4.10-16
Unrecoverable btrieve error 2 from operation 5 on desktop database, rebuild needed on volume xxxxx"
I have rebuild the (Mac) desktop and I've run vrepair which reported no errors.
Any ideas?

Are you running any desktop inventory programs(Bindview). I believe they use betrieve databases. You would have to use the betrieve rebuild utility to correct the problem in your Betrieve database.

No, not running anything like that. I believe we started getting the errors after we installed Legato backup software. The Legato UK suppliers have no ideas.
Cheers. [sig][/sig]

I found this on my Novell Support CD. I hope this helps.

Unrecoverable Btrieve error 2 on Desktop (Last modified: 5MAY1997) TID2909836
This document (2909836) is provided subject to the disclaimer at the end of this document.
Symptom
When copying files from a Macintosh workstation to the NetWare for Macintosh file server, the following message is displayed on the server console:

AFP-4.0-0: Unrecoverable Btrieve error 2 from operation 2 on Desktop database, rebuild needed on volume "<volume-name>"
Solution
In AFPCON, rebuild the desktop database by doing the following steps:

1. At the AFPCON main menu, select the "Maintenance and Status" option.

2. Select the "Volume Information" option.

3. Select the name of the volume on which the Desktop is to be rebuilt.

4. Then select the "Start Desktop Database Rebuild" option.

Note: If an abend occurs duing the desktop database rebuild process, then the rebuilder ran into a corrupt macintosh file on the server. This problem has been resolved with the latest AFP.NLM available from Novell.

Another option to rebuild the desktop database is to:

1. Unload afp

2. At the root of the volume there is a hidden directory called desktop.afp.

Flag the contents of the directory Normal -- flag desktop.afp\*.* N

3. Delete the contents of the directory -- del desktop.afp\*.*

4. Load afp
Causes
The file server had been brought down inappropriately by turning off the power switch rather than executing the DOWN command at the server console prompt. This resulted in a corrupt desktop database. The desktop database contains information associating Macintosh documents with applications and Macintosh files with icons. This information helps the Macintosh Operating System know which icons to display for files, and which applications to launch when documents are opened. All Macintosh volumes must maintain a desktop database.

After executing the desktop rebuild feature in AFPCON.NLM, the Macintosh workstations were able to copy files to the server without any errors.
