Hi

I have just burnt a CDRW using the Windows XP native burning software and I cannot read it in an ordinary CD ROM drive.
I guess I should finish or close the CDRW but I cannot see how to do this. I am sure there used to be an option called Make Compatible if you right clicked on the drive but this is not there now.

Any ideas anyone
Many thanks

Some older CD-ROM drives cannot read CD-RWs. MOST do, and even more read CD-R Discs. I don't know how to close the disc using Windows XP's native software...but it's easy in Nero - you just say "Disc-at-once" as the burn option.

Perhaps someone with more experience with XP's Burning Software can help you.

Sadly I do not have Nero on this machine. (I do use it at home). Thanks DragonQ0105.

Yes the burner will read it OK.
Thanks

One program I've used with good success is ISOBuster ( See if that works for you.

Iso buster looks like a useful utility.
I think I have discovered why I could not read my CD.
Looks like my burner is faulty. Windows keeps offering to burn the files to CD yet when I click my agreement, Windows says the files are already copied. Iso buster detects a blank disk !
Many thanks

I think you guys got off the point. At the start you said that after you burn a cdrw you can read it with a usual cdrom (and your optical device can read it). This is not a software problem, this a hardware problem: there is a big diference beetween the cd-r discs and cd-rw discs and therefor there is a big diference (let's call it of compatibility) beetween the devices that use them ...

It's nice to be important but it's more important to be nice.
Thanks for your attitude!

Thank you everyone for your posts.
I think it is a hardware error.
I have ordered a new burner.

STOP
You don't need a new burner.
Or at least this my opinion.
I have faced this kind of situations in tha past.
I think you need another cd-rom(cd-rw better) to read the cd-rw burned with the other optical device.

It's nice to be important but it's more important to be nice.
Thanks for your attitude!

The CDRW that I burned could not be read in several different drives. That's why I'm thinking its the burner.
Thanks

you should test this very carrefully beacouse as I told you there is always a problem between the cd-rw disc and the cd-rom device and this is a general problem that should always exist.
if there is only o compatibiliti problem between the disc (cd-rw) and the optical units then change the disc (cd-rw) but the minor probability of problem is for the burner.

It's nice to be important but it's more important to be nice.

I, too, am skeptical that the problem is the burner.

When you burn with XP's native utility, it actually writes data in a session and closes that session automatically creating a new TOC (Table of Contents) each time for each session.

Therefore, other CD-ROM's should be able to read the CD. Since they cannot, then either the brand of media or speed at which you are making the CD, is making it less compatible with regular CD-ROM's. At least that's what it sounds like to me.

CD's are cheap. Don't go with a generic brand for starters. Definitely test what you've done several times with different brands before you scrap the burner.
