Hi,

I have an Excel file which is password protected. The guy who set the password has passed away.

Is their any way at all to get into this file as I keep getting the password login prompt which of course I cannot get passed - Oh to be a film star who can crack passwords in one sweep [sad].

Thanks in advance

Tudor

Hi
This is a common problem with no easy solution. I've never used any crackers so can't vouch for their reliability but if you do a google search on
crack "excel password"
you may find a site that has a freeware version of their product. The problem with these (as I understand it) is that they will usually only work for passwords of up to 3 characters.

Beyond that it's a case of emptying the piggy bank and counting out the coppers for a full version.

Good luck
;-)

If a man says something and there are no women there to hear him, is he still wrong? [ponder]

To get into an excel file that has password protected access, the only way (I think) is to use a brute force approach (check every possible combination). Depending on how 'strong' the password is, this could take anything from a couple of minutes to aeons.

You can find brute force crackers available for free all over the net, or you can pay a 'pro' to do your excel cracking for you.

I guess you could also engage a medium...

Coupla questions:
How important is the file? Is it worth this much effort?

[smile]

Thanks guys

The file contians budget information so I guess the company considers it worth-while cracking!

I'll do a trawl of the internet...I hope I don't break it!

Thanks again

Oh...liked the "Medium" bit...very good!
