hi, i downloaded a netscape navigator file in the format navigator-v479-us.ppc_rs6000-ibm-aix4.tar into my win98 PC.
using "ftp get"(in binary mode), i have it transferred into my aix box with the filename navigator-v479-us.ppc_rs6000-ibm-aix4.tar.gz. i tried to unpack it using uncompress, zcat, unpack but it wasn't successful.

hoh do i unpack it?

hi,

gunzip is not available on my system. how do i obtain it?

thanks,

Hi,
go in bull-freeware or aixpdslib or other.

You can find link to them also in the Tab "Links",
of this fourm.

Download them (also by W98), then ftp-put-bin on AIX.
Create an empty dir, cd there, and run the .exe .
Use "smitty install_latest" and put a dot "." in
directory field. Press F4 you can see items to install.

If you add other pakage in this dir, before re-run installp
(smitty install_latest) enter "inutoc ." or "rm .toc" .

( gzip goes under /usr/local/bin,
netscape in standard executable AIX dir; )

( it's a good idea, create a jfs mounted on /usr/local. )

bye.

Am I missing something here? It seems to me that you have simply renamed the file with a .gz suffix, unless the file you downloaded initially did have a .gz extension (not clear from the first post). If it didn't adding a .gz doesn't convert the file into a gzipped version. I suggest you rename the file to remove the .gz and try to untar it in the usual way. HTH.
