Ok , here we go, I have to install cisco any connect on one of my laptops, however my partner decided to bring it to a so called IT pro (!!!!!) ..that individual only did MS updates (about 42 unnecessary files to be exact !!)

I am very careful about using space on my devices and I only use manual updates to choose. MS office is not even a paid product on my laptop and that person messed up..also IE browser updates which makes no sense ..however that IT person never ever helped in installing cisco any connect but used up time and space for updating unnecessary ms products...

what is the possibility to uninstall some of the files (sometimes it's a bridge u can't go back !!)

any help very much appreciated .

(PS even the help desk is a kind of not knowing anything..)

There is so much wrong with this post. What are you talking about? Why would you install only some updates??? Space problem on hard drive? Otherwise not a very good idea to selectively apply updates.

about 42 unnecessary files to be exact !!
What do you mean by unnecessary?

MS office is not even a paid product on my laptop
Is it a bootleg copy on your laptop????

IE browser updates which makes no sense
Sounds like it makes a LOT of sense to update your browser version AND install patches to avoid exploits/malware!!

what is the possibility to uninstall some of the files
CONTROL PANEL >>> Programs and Features (Yes, you can remove)

no there is no bootleg copy on my laptop , I just don't use the product and don't see any sense in updating MS office...

the latest IE browser update which should be better and improved is now known to be a horrible update (IE 11). IE 9 worked even better and faster..thank god there is chrome..

yes you can remove some of the files but not everything ...

all I am saying is that many many updates are not necessary and that's why a manual update is way better ..

>MS office is not even a paid product on my laptop

Not quite sure I know how you can update Microsoft Office if you don't have Microsoft Office on your laptop ...

>also IE browser updates which makes no sense
Well, AnyConnect has a browser-based option and is a security tool. So I'd anticipate that you'd want to ensure that your browser is as up-to-date as possible, wouldn't you?

>is now known to be a horrible update (IE 11). IE 9 worked even better and faster
I have no idea where you are getting this information, but it is just wrong. IE11 is a step up on IE10 in both terms of standards adherence and performance, and IE10 was itself a big step up on IE9. I can't find any reputable source suggesting that IE11 is a horrible update of anything* (how it compares to alternative browsers is a somewhat different matter and everyone has their own opinion)

*There were some very early reports of RTM IE11 performance issues when it first appeared on Windows 8.1, but as I recall they turned out not to be IE11's fault, rather it was to do with some older graphics drivers not being updated to support Windows 8.1 properly. This was never, of course, an issue for IE11 on Windows 7.

Hi CCX008,

To un-install the updates, do this:
[ol 1]
[li]Navigate to Start > Control Panel > Programs and Features.[/li]
[li]In the left pane, select View Installed Updates.[/li]
[li]After a few moments you will see a list of updates grouped by product, one of which will be Internet Explorer 11.[/li]
[li]Un-install Internet Explorer 11. This will revert your laptop to the previous version of IE.[/li]
[li]Click on the Installed On column Header. This will re-order the updates in date order rather than by product. If you want, click on the drop-down arrow next to Installed On and select the date your laptop was updated by the tech to reduce the list.[/li]
[li]You can now un-install the updates if you wish by selecting them and choosing Uninstall from the menubar or just double-click on them. (Please note that if they are security updates, I would advise against un-installing them. However, it's your laptop...)[/li]
[/ol]

PS - You may wish to consider using the Internet Explorer 11 Blocker Toolkit to prevent IE 11 being re-installed. However, this might not be an issue if you only update manually, which it sounds like you do.

Hope this helps...

Yeah, I forgot to mention to check the View Installed Updates box, but an uninstall is just a click away.
In general, updating/patching is better/safer than not. We're not trying to pick on you, just inform.

It's quite probably the 'trial' version that is bundled in with OEM installs as a "Puppy Dog" sales tactic.

Personally I find that Linux Mint (Any version from 13 on) is a perfect way way of getting rid of Those annoying Windows problems.

Why not yell at the "moron IT guy" and get them to fix your "issues".

In the future, simply tell them and your partner never to touch your laptop ever again.

Being in both comms and IT, I almost take offense to your reference "IT Moron."

Perhaps cut the guy some slack and give him the opportunity to fix it.

The thing is, .... without explicit instructions to the contrary, us "IT Morons" will try to do our best to try and protect the client's computer(s) from their owners own apparent stupdity in NOT keeping Windows fully patched. Even when fully patched Windows "security" is about as good at keeping attackers out as a string vest is at keeping your nipples warm in winter!!

Heh!

Yeah, I forgot to take offense. So what does that mean about me?

@goombawaho (MIS)..please accept my apologies ok ...I was tired and stressed out ..and I need you guys , so I don't wanna burn any bridges ..however my point is just when you make that first call and they ask about if you updated AV and so on ..

I believe they are always take the step that everybody doesn't know nothing and ask so offensive questions until they realize the level of knowledge about the individual...

However my "Q"s are pretty much cisco anyconnect related and I work on it ...

No, no. I was joking. I was NOT offended and I understand that many people are irritated by IT people that can't speak regular engrish vs. IT engrish. Many IT people are also absent minded professor/dipsticks so it's understandable. It's so common for people to have bad attitudes about IT people that I'm not offended when people say nasty things about their FORMER IT person. Nobody ever has anything bad to say about me...............

CCX008,

Were you able to remove the updates and IE11 OK using the instructions I posted?

If you are concerned about the size of updates then you might want to make sure you are using Windows Update (just Windows) rather than Microsoft Update (adds MS Office updates, SQL and Exchange).

To revert back:
1. Go to Start > Control Panel > Windows Update.
2. In the left pane, click on Change settings.
3. Remove any tick from the Microsoft Update checkbox.

4. Click on OK.

If you really don't use MS Office and want to reclaim the space, un-install and/or use the MS Office removal tool to clean up the remnants.

Hope this helps...

Not only from updates but from a whole lot of other stupidity.

While I agree with most of the comments, it should be noted that running Windows Updates on a computer that has not had updates done for a while is not a guaranteed winner. For example, by default it will install the latest version of IE, which can cause problems. I had bank sites be completely incompatible with IE 11, which is not a real good thing when you are trying to run a business.

My point is, blindly running windows updates without first communicating with the user is not a very good idea either. So yea, while "moron" may be harsh, I don't think the "IT moron" did such a wonderful job here.
