Every time I( boot, or reboot, my opening desktop screen has a Window pop up. It lists the name of a file, and asks which program I want to open it with. If I open it with Windows Media Player, it opens to Windows Media Center. If I open it with Notepad, it shows:

I can find NO file with the name of the program (it is My name, and the name of the computer!), indicated. Nothing from "Search", and nothing in "MsConfig" > Startup. It doesn't hurt anything, I just exit and continue on - but it bothers me! It shouldn't be there, and I want it gone!!! (Show tantrum!) <grin>

well, it looks like a LOG file, or the output of a inventory program... it is possible that the original program that was associated with the file, has been already removed...

once you open the file with Notepad, go to FILE then SAVE AS, it should place you into the folder where the file is residing...

you could also use AUTORUNS (SysInternals aka. MS Sysinternals), to see where the file is located at or why the LOG file is being read at BOOT...

How to ask a question, when posting them to a professional forum.
Only ask questions with yes/no answers if you want "yes" or "no"

Update or reinstall the drivers for your network card, assuming that you have a "NVIDIA nForce" ethernet card installed.

Chris.

Autoruns as BBB says will show more than what msconfig will show as for some of the things Windows believe should be hidden. If you cant find something that is running on startup in there, double check your Startup folder in the Program List.

I think I finally cured it! The confusing part is that My name is Mick. My computer is named "Micker 7" (my nickname + Windows 7). Notice the upper and lower case letters. The file giving me problems was named "Micker". I finally went through the registry. I found a lot of "Micker 7", and temp directories named "MICKER" (all upper case). I finally found ONE listing for C:/User/Micker! I went there and found a 2K file created in 2010! I deleted it! (Backed it up to a flash drive first to be safe).
When I rebooted, I didn't get the "mystery" file - but I did get a message that a program "My Network Speed" needed to be upgraded! It is a shareware program that wants $10.00 to upgrade.
Apparently it was a "trial" that finally expired! I haven't even seen it in years, I don't know where it's been hiding... but it's gone now!

And so is my problem!
