a file has appeared on my desktop with the name:

-ÙWFF½ÒH.J_P

and i cant seem to get rid of it. when i try to delete it i get a message saying :

Cannot delete file: File system error (1026)

it appeared along side two folders and when i ran scan disk the folders have gone (scan disk said it had done something with the file fragments) but the one file mentioned above is still there. running scandisk again says theres no error and i tried disk defragmenter which didnt resolve the problem. The properties for the file says it is 0 bytes in size and the icon is slightly faded as if it were a hidden file. its appearence coincided when i restarted the computer after it crashed, just after i was saving a document which is now lost, and a download was completed. Can anyone help, i dont know if this is a problem or not.

thanks in advance for any help.

How about booting to a Win-98 prompt, going to the \Windows\Desktop directory and then delete it that way with the DOS "del" command.

Bill.

See if this might help:

Cannot Delete Files or Folders with Extended Characters

------------------------------------------------------------
The information in this article applies to:

Microsoft Windows 95
Microsoft Windows 98

------------------------------------------------------------

SYMPTOMS
You may not be able to delete, move, open, or otherwise access a file or folder. In Windows Explorer, some of the characters in the name of the file or folder are replaced with underscore characters (_). In addition, you may experience one or more of the following symptoms:

When you try to open a file in WordPad, you receive the following error message:
<filename>
This file cannot be found.
Make sure that the correct path and filename are given.
where <filename> is the filename displayed in Windows Explorer, not the actual filename.

When you try to delete a file in Windows Explorer or drag a file to the Recycle Bin, you receive the following error message
Cannot delete <filename>: Cannot find the specified file. Make sure you specify the correct path and filename.
where <filename> is the filename displayed in Windows Explorer, not the actual filename.

When you double-click a folder in Windows Explorer, you receive the following error message
The folder '<foldername>' does not exist.
where <foldername> is the folder name displayed in Windows Explorer, not the actual folder name.

In all cases, ScanDisk does not detect that a problem exists on the drive.

CAUSE
The name of the file or folder contains characters from the extended character set that cannot be converted to ANSI.

RESOLUTION
You may be able to delete or rename the file or folder using one of the following methods:

If you want to delete a file, try to delete the file using the DEL command and "*.*" wildcard designator. Note that this method deletes all the files in the folder containing the file you want to delete, so you should move all the files you want to save to a different folder first. To do so, follow these steps:

Type the following commands at an MS-DOS command prompt. Press ENTER after each command:

cd \
md keep

Copy all the files you want to save from the folder containing the file you want to delete to the KEEP folder you created in step 1.

In the directory containing the file you want to delete, type the following command at an MS-DOS command prompt and press ENTER:

del *.*

For files and folders, you may be able to delete or rename the file or folder using the "?" wildcard designator to represent the extended characters in the file or folder name. For example, if the first character in the filename README.TXT were replaced by a character from the extended character set, you could use the following command to rename the file back to README.TXT:

ren ?eadme.txt readme.txt

NOTE: The "?" wildcard designator is used to represent any character in the wildcard designator's position. Use caution when you use this method to make sure you do not inadvertently delete or rename files other than the intended file.

For files or folders, you may be able to delete the file or folder using the DELTREE command. To do so, change to the affected folder and type "deltree *.*" (without quotation marks). Confirm only the files and folders you want to delete. The DELTREE command removes files and folders without regard to extended characters in their names.

Use a disk utility such as Norton Disk Doctor from Symantec or PC Tools from Central Point Software to rename or delete the file.

Try to rename the file with the .OLD extension and try a reboot, then see if it can be deleted. It sounds to me that the error means that the file is being used by windows and its an access denial issue, I could be wrong.

There is a program called clean disk 3 that may be able to remove it. You would need to put the name of the file within the options of the cleaner program to work to delete it. is where that program can be found, good luck

Question: One of my NT 4.0 boxes is having the above problem "FILE SYSTEM ERROR (1026)".

I've looked on MS TechNet and various discussion group archives and the only thing I can find is: All the above solutions and nothing will work. I've tried to copy it, rename it, the blah blah blah.... and no success. I can't but to MSDOS mode because it's an NTFS partition. I've thought about using NTFS Commander but I don't know...

Anyway, if you guys could help or know of a solution could you pass it on?

Cheers,
hn

Perhaps this problem has been long solved, but try this if not

boot to DOS mode
switch to c:\windows\desktop
use the DOS delete command, but you have to enter the ASCII codes for the file:
del -ÙWFF½ÒH.J_P

ASCII codes (code page 437)
Ù is ALT+151
½ is ALT+171
Ò is alt+149

You may have to use the ASCII codes for the capital letters too
W is 87, F is 79, H is 72, J is 74 and P is 80

If they don't look right when you type in the ASCII code, you'll have to figure out which code page you are using and get the table. JL Filler,Wilton Public Schools, Wilton CT

Issue:
Cannot Delete File: File System Error (1026).
Cause:
This issue can be caused by one of two reasons:
Insufficient hard disk space on the computer.
A file is copied or moved to a disk, then deleted, and then the Undo Copy or Undo Move is clicked to try to retrieve the file.
Attempting to copy or delete a file over a network and the server is having difficulties sending the file because of security issues or high network traffic.
Solution:

A file is copied or moved to a disk, then deleted, and then the Undo Copy or Undo Move is clicked to try to retrieve the file.
From the Windows desktop right click on the Recycle Bin and click properties.
In Recycle Bin Properties remove the check from "Do not move files to the Recycle Bin. Remove files immediately when deleted"
Click Apply and then ok.
Note: The Undo Copy or Undo Move do not work with a removable media or floppy disk drive.
