I'm posing this question:
(taken from lp install script)
If you had a choice to install printer on

1) UnixWare
2) OpenServer

Able to install on SCO 5.7 - (assumed Openserver was SCO)

If you were installing printers on different flavors --
what flavor would you assume Unixware is?

UnixWare and OpenServer are both from the evil SCO. UnixWare is for the desktop and OpenServer is the server OS. I have setup printers on both and UnixWare has a better print subsystem (IMHO).

I do phone support for print subsystems for most of the UNIX flavours and would recommend that you not use either. Not as an attack on a company I don't like but because they are inferior to most the the other OSes out there.

Out of all the distro's I support, I would recommend FreeBSD. It has been the most stable. It is free and also works on the x86 architecture (same as SCO)

I have some basic notes at

Unixware is for the desktop"

Not even close.....
Unixware which came from novell (at least sco's immediate predecessor) is SVr4 (System V release 4) based.
Openserver was developed by SCO and is SVr3 based.
SCO had a product called opendesktop which co-incidently was for the desktop.

Both of these products are solid and definitely have their purposes. Unfortunately they are now controlled by a company called "The SCO Group" (TSG) which used to be called Caldera.
SCO is now called Tarantella and does not deal with these OS's any more.

Both OS's use the System V lp subsystem and are configured very similarly. CUPS is available as of Unixware 7.1.4 and Openserver 5.0.7 update pack 2.

oops hit submit too soon....

anyway Unixware is the more scalable product and can use up to 8 CPU's and 32 GB of ram...nice desktop, but in a year or 2 who knows it may be the norm.
