Being a UNIX novice, can you tell me whether we can perform UNIX differential backups using Arcserve v11.5?
In addtion, can you mix the unix and Windows backups and perform daily differential and weekly full backups?

Thanks in advance

As long as you have the linux client installed.

You can do diff's on any platform, it's all about the date and archive bit

How about the UNIX agent? If you set it up to do Diffs, would it backup as Full?
You're saying only Linux agents can perform differential\Inc backups?

Thanks

No, sorry for the confusion - CA has both linux and Unix agents.
Diff's are not platform dependent - you can select diff's for any. Differential backup -- backup of all changes since last full backup. The day following the full backup would include changes that day. The differential backup for the second day following a full backup would include the changes the first day and the second day since the full backup.

Diffs on UNIX/Linux rely on date the file was last backed up as there is no concept of an archive bit in UNIX/Linux filesystems.

For UNIX/Linux incremental / diferential backups you have to go to backup jobs with file modification filters applied.
Setting the backup jobs to incremental or differential will result in Full backups for UNIX/Linux as these systems do not use Archive bits like vschumpy explained.
