UNIX sco release 5.05 system does not boot:

cannot open device hd(40)/boot
stage 1 boot failure: error loading hd(40)/boot

what to do?

Normally fixed by new hard drive, reloading the operating system, and restoring programs and data from backup.

What resources do you have available? Emergency boot floppy? Backups? Hardware parts?

If this is a single drive that does not have actual damage preventing access then there may be hope. You can build a new unix server on a new drive. Once it is up and running then you can put the old drive on the system as a second drive and add drive to the new unix server using the "mkdev hd" command. You can find full instructions from A.P.
