I am currently testing High-end printers, Via many differnt flavors of unix, My question is,

Are there any small portable applications that I can install on any flavor of unix and perform print tests from those applications?

Well since each UNIX flavor has a different print subsystem I'd say your going to have fun. I have replaced many print subsystems with CUPS for a common interface across platforms.

Have you considered the standard dump of a PCL laden text message through the print spooler? Should give a pretty rich test of the capabilities.

isn't netcat cross platform? If you have hpnp on the printers this would work well.

Do you have any more details,, like what command to use.

If you have embedded PCL in a text file it would be a matter of cat textfile > /dev/lp0 or whatever port you are using. A SCO alternative would be lp -dprinter textfile to be through the spooler system. Other systems have spoolers but I've got no experience there.
