I appear to have a 0 length unix.mp. I'm aware this needs recreating / restoring, but was wondering other than not being able to create a mksysb, what effect this will have on the system / perfomance. We do have it backed up on tape, which is currently offsite and won't return for 2 days. If I call it back early we will incur a charge and have to do loads of paper work, so I guess I'm asking is it ok to leave it a couple of days? --

Hi Mrn,
I work with AIX 4.3.3.0 since 2000 and now I checked some
of my boxes and see that at least 4 from it have no
file /usr/lib/boot/unix_mp (and at least 12 have it). All is OK.
Every 20-25 days I do mksysb without problem...
Regards Boris

Have you tried restoring the mksysb though? and do you do a mkszfile before each mksysb, as this is where I get the error.

nm: /unix: 0654-202 Error while reading object file header.

0301-153 bosboot: /unix not found.
nm: /unix: 0654-202 Error while reading object file header.

0301-153 bosboot: /unix not found.
expr: 0402-050 Syntax error.
/usr/bin/mkszfile[404]: test: 0403-004 Specify a parameter with this command.
Syntax Error The source line is 1.
The error context is
{print $4 + >>> } <<<
awk: 0602-502 The statement cannot be correctly parsed. The source line is 1.

I have seen boxes go without problems for days without
the file. The working kernel is created and exists.....in
hd5...If you need to regenerate the kernel you really can't
without the unix_mp file..... So no bosboot or anything
can be done..
and as you discovered no mksysb....since it can't create a
bootable device...and of course a few minor other problems...

Other than that you really can go without too much hassle...
However, if the system crashed, you have no current backup.

You could consider a back up of your data only and rely on
the old mksysb at the bank. If you system did crash,
You could request the tape and get the file, and the full
mksysb and then restore your data from the backup tape...
or tar tape....?

Again...my opinion....

Thanks,

As it is only going to be a couple of days, I think I'll leave it alone. Any Idea What causes the problem in the first place?. I'm sure I've read somewhere that root filling up can cause the problem, but I do have some pretty vivid dreams.... --
