Hi,

I will be starting to use AIX at work, but was wondering if there another compatable system that I could train on at home or in my other office. I don't do a lot at work as its all document based but I would like to learn.

Am currently using Mandriva, but have used Solaris before. Would a Virtual Solaris Machine be of any use, or are there linux variants that are closer?

Many thanks for all help and suggestions.

Regards

I ended up with the same dilema. In the end I picked up a cheap second hand IBM workstation (Power 3 system) with a copy of AIX 5.3. Which was/is more beneficial as that way you get to do things such as install the O/S and patch etc.. as well as play around with installation and administration. This way you get to learn how AIX kit and software work.

Any chance that you can get a micropartition on an existing server? Ideally you're running VIO, which will allow you to grab a bit of SAN disk space to use for a rootvg (OS disks), a fraction of a CPU, and a small amount of RAM. This would allow you to use all the bells and whistles of AIX 5.3/6.1 in a tiny footprint.
