I am trying to setup from scratch my first UNIX system. Solaris 7 Intel Platform I need help on getting the software to install I have searched and can not located any information on installing UNIX. right now my unit has no operating system, and the only way that I can get my cd Rom to be seen is booting the system with a windows startup disk. Is there a disk for unix that dos the same thing? if so where can I find it ? please any help would be great, I am very egar to learn UNIX and would like to set this up.

It sounds like you need to configure your system bios. The CD your recieved with your media kit should be bootable. Simply change the boot order in your system bios to boot to the cdrom first.

It sounds like your bios is set to boot to "A, floopy" first.

Thank you for your reply. It did do that and I am still not able to get it to boot from the cd. is there a single user version of unix on the internet I can download ?

I don't believe that Solaris will run on an intel platform, you'll need Linux for intel processors which is the free option - or you can always go out and buy a Sun box ??

Lags,

There is an Intel version of Solaris, has been for a couple of years now actually. Mike

Email welcome if you're in a hurry or something -- but post in tek-tips as well please, and I will post my reply here as well.

If you want real unix that was desgined to run on intel, check out
I have used openserver 5.0X for a few years now.
I like it.
Unixware is also pretty good. Both are offered from SCO, or should I say caldera.

Both can be downloaded for free or you can purchase a media kit online.

I would just purchase a copy of linux, such as redhat.
