Hi there, I am trying to understand the UNIX file system if it is similair to say Win NT and an NTFS or what is UNIX's file system?

Also what can you actually do with Xwin32 - is it possible to view files and programs on the Main UNIX system and change them running an Xwin session?

Thanks

ps Just learning all about Unix so any sites or other information would be fantastic!

Hi there
Unix and Windows NT have different "core design" philosophies. What is the core design of Windows NT? and
What is the core design of Unix?

Thanks

To help us help you, are you using Linux or Unix and what version or distribution?
There are several unix file systems. ext2 is most popular on Linux, then there's ufs, hpfs and others on unix. Regarding the question: is it similar? - Well, both ext2 and NTFS have various time stamps, will handle security at various levels with different permission levels for different groups, both have a heirarchical directory structure and will take long path and filenames. How they implement these features underneath is entirely different.

Within an Xwindows session you CAN manipulate your files in many ways. But the details of how to do this depends on which window manager you are using such as Gnome, KDE, etc.

Hope that gives you more to go on.
