Unique Reference Number Allocation

Can anyone offer any ideas on the following poser. I am using Act Premium 2008. Is it possible to add a Unique Reference Number to each contact record? I am not needing to setup any system of auto allocation after i have completed this first instance as the number of new contacts is at present no more than 5 or 6 a month so i can just eyeball these records and append manually. I have thought to just do a direct export and then append my Reference Numbers in excel and then import again. Not sure why but this is not working for me. I am a novice at ACT! but do have a good knowledge of access use. Any help would be appreciated.

The process of exporting your ACT! contact records in CSV format and then appending a unique serial number (using Excel for example) and then re-importing them is basically sound.

If this isn't working, I'd suggest that you check the 'Contact Merge Option' settings during the import wizard to ensure the existing records are updated (try using 'replace with source contact').

You don't need to re-import ALL fields - just sufficent to recognise the source contact records when you are importing, as defined by your 'Dulicate Checking' settings (under Tools, Preferences, General Tab).

Duplication checking is done on Contact, Company and Phone fields by default,so (unless you change this) you only need to re-import these fields plus the unique number field.
