unexpected end-of-file

A few times I have gotten a pop-up saying

Could not open (name of file) because an unexpected end-of-file was encountered.

I have gotten this with PSD and TIFF files. Just what is this and what causes it?

Maybe corrupt files?
Have you tried opening up the (tif) in question with another software?

The only other programme I have to open fotos is Word and in that I get a message saying there was an error in opening the file.

Then it seems the file may be corrupt.
A final test would be to send the file to someone else to see if they can open it.
