Hi.
I'm running an Exchange 2000 server which is causing me one major problem at the moment.
My server sends to certain email addresses correctly, yet doesn't to others.
Ones with a "." in the name field of an email address it more or less NEVER delivers to. Each time I get notified with this:

"This is an automatically generated Delivery Status Notification.
THIS IS A WARNING MESSAGE ONLY.
YOU DO NOT NEED TO RESEND YOUR MESSAGE.
Delivery to the following recipients has been delayed."

The original message, sent from my user, was sent on Friday. The server message came back on Monday, followed a while later by a message saying that the send had fallen through.

Forcing it doesn't work either.

But it is not solely limited to addresses with a "." in the name field. It just seems that most of the email addys it has a problem with do have a "." there.

Must admit I am struggling. Any help will be greeted with much joy from my end.

Thankyou.

Frazer,

I am having the same problem - as with you certain email adresses with dots in the name fail but not only those ones fail.

I assume like me you are using the E2K SMTP server to deliver the messages directly and you are not going through your ISPs SMTP server.

I have looked at the output of the SMTP log on my machine - SMTP is finding and logging on to the correct SMTP server to send the message - it gets to the point of sending the RCPT command for the recipients but never sends a DATA command and presumably times out.

Has anyone else out there got any idea what is going on? My ISP has been no use at all.

Simon.

I'm still having issues with it Simon.
My ISP has been very good, but they still can't come up with a fix.
One of my tech helpers suggested that I route my mail through a smart host, available through right clicking on connectors in Exchange Manager.
I haven't had time to address this, having been away on holiday. The only other change I've made is to route my mail through another DNS server. It's fixed some but not all of my problems.
It was good to hear that I'm not the only one with this problem. I hope we can fix it. Let me know if you have any luck, and I'll do ths same.

I am trying to set up the smart host thing now as I think this is the easiest short term fix.

I'll let ya know how I get on.

Simon.

OK - I think I have fixed the problem.
Maybe this is a well known thing and in a FAQ somewhere but anyway:

In Exchange manager, Connectors, your domain SMTP, properties - on the advanced tab tick the send HELO box.

Now mail gets through to all my probem domains.

So either this is a problem with the ESMTP implementation on those particular domains I was sending to (but there were all different SMTP servers) or there is a problem with ESMTP in Exchange.

Hope this helps some other people out.

Simon.
