Recently moved Exchange 5.5 (SP4) from an NT box to Win2K. When sending to or receiving attachments from one specific address/domain, we, and they, always receive the following undeliverable error:
"The content length of the message is too long for the recipient to take delivery
The MTS-ID of the original message is: <server info>...9742065 bytes exceeds server limit of 4194304"
Here is specific info:
1)We have no limits set on our side. We have tested and sent 6, 10, 20MB attachments to other destinations(Yahoo and other recipients) with no failure.
2)We have contacted the recipient and they are running Exchange 5.5 on NT. They have no limits set on their server and can send large attachments to other recipients as well and have done so; tested specifically on Yahoo.
3)We have tested several emails from different mailboxes from both our systems with the same results.
4)Prior to our migration to Win2K, we did not experience this problem.
5)Have installed the post SP4 rollup for Exchange 5.5 and IS patches.
Have checked MTA, IS limits, User limits and all have no limits. Have checked this and other forums with no resolution.
Any help is greatly appreciated!

Have the recipient's Email admin check the incoming message size limit on the individual mailbox properties. They may have only checked the mailbox size restriction.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the quick response. We have been in communication with the email admin and confirmed the settings - no limit. We even attempted to email the attachment(s) to his (administrator) address with the exact same result.
What's puzzling is how this error/message appears only when we send to one another. When we asked the admin to send 6 and 10MB attachments to a consultant yahoo account, it succeeded; as did our attempt to do the same. It is only when our domain sends to their domain that this error occurs.

So when you send the 6 MB attachment from the yahoo account to mailboxes on both sides, it succeeds?

If that's the case, check the following setting on both sides.

IMS -> Internet Mail tab -> E-Mail Domain button...

If you see the other domain listed in there, select it and hit 'edit'. There's a size restriction setting, so you can limit the message size by domain.

Hope this helps!

Yes, sending large attachments to other addresses/domains (we've tried Yahoo, Seeqmail, and others) works from both our locations.

IMS -> Internet Mail tab -> E-Mail Domain...
We checked this also and there are no restrictions. We even tried manually setting a limit for that domain to 20MB in this option and it still gave us the same error.
Though I am hesitant, I may have to send this Microsoft's way...

Thanks again for your rec's.
