Unchecked cube perspective dimensions displaying in Report Builder

I created a cube perspective, and unchecked 3 dimensions, so that the parent dimension and child attributes are all unchecked. I saved the solution, reprocessed the SSAS database, and regenerated the SSAS report model. When I open a Report Builder report based off this report model, and select the cube perspective I created, the 3 dimensions are displaying within the 'Entities' section. I can click each dimension and all the attributes display as well.

Can anyone tell me why the dimensions in this perspective are displaying in Report Builder?

Thank you.

Can you confirm its just report builder?

Have you tried anything else... excel, proc-clarity etc?

I confirmed that it's Report Builder. I can open an MDX query window in SQL Server Management Studio, select the perspective and see only the dimensions that were included in the perspective. The dimensions that were not checked in the perspective are not displaying.

I thought that might be the case. I wouldn’t be surprised if you can never get them to work. I am finding that SSRS, Report Builder and *models based on SSAS* are a little disjointed from the MS product set. I guess we have to remember that report builder was another companies product that was bundled in.

In any case I had a similar requirement to yourself but I could not attempt the perspectives option as I don’t have Enterprise Etd. The users wanted a full model which by default is everything in the cube when you generate the model from the data source and they wanted several ‘cut down’ models with perhaps 2-3 dimensions and 1 measure group.

Ok I thought I’d edit the model like you do with SQL based models. I won’t go into details here but that’s a non runner with *models based on SSAS*. I then tried the roles/permissions route which works in a sense but still initially displays all the dimensions and measures to everyone and just brings back blanks for any disallowed items. Users threw that back at me as you can imagine.

I then found the following article which enabled me to do exactly what I wanted.

It really works a treat. Just one point though, the author suggest models can be ‘edited’. I initially deleted and renamed things and it didn’t work. I then just edited the properties of entities to visible = false and it works fine. You also have to hide the dimension roles within a measure group otherwise when they navigate to a measure group the dimensions related to the measure group are visible again even though you have hidden them.

Thanks, Alan! The suggestion you provided worked wonderfully.
