We had the same issue with one offices after a migration.
Found that the WebClient service was not running on the users machine.

Hi ehaze... No couldn't get it fixed, had to roll back to sp2007 snapshot from friday night and lose the weekend's upgrade work - painful... Need to set it all up on test and see if your idea works before trying again on live... Thanks Mike
