Hi,
I've not been for long in the area,
so please someone give me a tip:
- May more than one AIX machine with the same hostname reside
in the same physical LAN?
- May the local hostname and the DNS record be different?
The AIX is not the DNS server, but due to licensing constrains we must keep the hostname unchanged, while adding some records in the DNS, in order that users access the machines based on name, rather than IP address.

Yes you can have two machines with the same hostname! within the AIX box, nothing will stop you from defining a name that exist in one of the machines on the same physical LAN! But you can't have two machines with the same IPs on the same physical LAN!

It is always better to name each machine differently to avoid confusion.

- May the local hostname and the DNS record be different?
Yes they can. But again you will confuse your self with this kind of setup!

Khalid

Thanks!
Sorry for the stupid questions,
but I was not sure what the local hostname was
used for, i.e. if it is not going to ne sent
to the DNS server and thus confuse it.
If it is a totally local resource, it will obviously
do no harm if different from the DNS record.

Don't say stupid questions! We are here to help and learn from each other :)

The hostname is something local to the machine but the IP associated with that machine should be unique among others in the same physical LAN. The name should be unique in the DNS as well so the machines can refer to it.

Khalid

You may have to twiddle a bit with hostname resolution on the box so that when "box1" does a hostname lookup it will get its own address from /etc/hosts and not the address for the other "box1" as known on the DNS server.
Google knows where to find more info: [google]aix hostname resolution netsvc.conf[/google]

Thanks, guys.
The main idea is that the hostname is not trasferred to the DNS server, so it will not be tricked.
p5wizard,
Thanks for the tip, but the two machines do not talk to each other, at least not now.
Thanks,
Mitko

That's just my point, it might need to talk to itself, so it needs to find its own address instead of the other box's address with the same name...
