We re placed a Win98 PII 400 128Meg PC With a WinNT 4.0 SP 6a PIII 1.0ghz w/ 512meg PC since this has happened we are experiencing periods where foxpro 2.6 is unable to write or rename a file using the filer (most recient example fbudge~1.dbf to fbudget1.dbf)however I used a win98 machine to do the very same thing with no problem. The user very rarely reboots (last time logged to network in excess of 2weeks ago) he however is the MIS VP. Could we have missed some configuration items or is rebooting possibly part of the Issue. This is a Netware 5.0 network.

Hope there are answers out there.

Todd,
Back when Win95 first came out, MS had a KnowledgeBase article that listed a number of things that didn't work the same / as well / at all, compared to Win 3.x. This article no longer exists (except on old TechNet CDs), but one item about filer indicates that it doesn't always work (especially in directories with "more 600 entries")and can even "kill" FPW. In Win NT, use the standard Windows Explorer for these tasks, or consider upgrading to VFP 6/7.

Thanks for the response, however I left out that we are using 2.6a for dos if that makes a difference.

Thanks Again

It makes a lot of difference, since most of the problems seem to be only in the FP Windows version.

I'm writing this on a slower PIII (500Mhz) NT 4.0 SP6a w/ 383MB of RAM. I fired up FPD 2.6a running in the 'X' mode, and it didn't seem to have any problems using FILER on my local NTFS drives. I tried renaming both long file names (LFN) and standard 8.3 files. I tried it in both a small directory - 20 files, and a bigger one - 768 files. Can you define how to "write" using FILER?

Any chance these files are on the Novell server? Since it's implementation for LFN's is different, and may be dependent on the Netware client you're using. I'm currently running NT/2000 client v4.80.SP3. My network guy has already gone home, but I'll check tomorrow to find out if there are any server configuration options in this area ("back in the old days" you just had to add the O/S2 namespace NLM in the start up for each volume you wanted to support LFNs).

All files are on a netware server, and sorry I was refering saving the programs created in foxpro to the network drive. From the description the user gives is that retry's allow the save to occure.

Thanks
