unable to upload in Windows Sharepoint Services

I am using Windows Sharepoint Services as the intranet for my company. I have several remote users logging in via VPN and one particular user is unable to upload documents. He can create a folder but not delete it too. I removed and re-added his account and it did nothing. He belongs to the same groups as most of the other users, which are: Guest, Reader, and Contributor.

What's weird is that it doesn't give him an error. He goes to the uploads page, selects the document to upload and clicks on Save and Close. When he clicks Save and Close though it begins to load the next page but the page times out.

He is running Norton Antivirus and Internet Security/Intrustion Detection System. I had him disable it and he got the same results. He is on Windows XP Home Edition SP1, could that be a problem? I don't know what the internet browser requirements are or if its some how blocking it. I even had him put the URL of the intranet in his Trusted Sites in IE.

Anyone have any thoughts?

Hello,

Windows XP Home edition should not be a problem in this case. I have used that for our SharePoint Services environment and it works fine.

If it is not a user-rights problem it sounds a like a communication problem, that something is blocking his upload. Since the user can create a folder he should also be able to add a document.

What kind of internet connection is the user using?
Is the document large in size?

If possible have the user test from another computer (or if you as an admin could test with his account).
Minimum browser requirements for sharepoint is
Internet Explorer 5.01 with servicepack 2
Netscape Navigator 6.2 or later

Do you have anonynmous access turned on? If you do make sure the user actually signs in before trying to do anything, I have experience problems with anonymous access turned on and the user does not sign in before trying to upload a document, sharepoint should then ask for user credentials, but everynow and then the login prompt does not pop-up.

I agree with you in that it sounds like a communication problem if security is okay.

The user has either a DSL or a cable connection coming from the east coast and I'm in California. The document he's trying to upload is a word doc with only the word "test" inside.

I haven't tested his account from another computer yet. I'll have to get his password and do that.

Anonynmous access is turned off.
Do you how the Guest group works with Sharepoint? Why does it put him in there if I manually created his account and added him to the Reader and Contributor's groups? I don't know if that is relevant here but am just curious.

I was able to successfully login to Sharepoint as the problem user from another computer and upload/create/delete files and folders. So the problem is definitely his computer. I just don't know what is causing it. I want to say it's his Norton but he we tried it w/ it disabled and got the same results.
Any thoughts?

About Firewalls
Windows SharePoint Services supports connectivity through firewalls. Depending on your configuration, you must make sure your firewall is open for the standard HTTP ports 80 and 443. When using a firewall, you must configure your Web sites with Basic authentication because Integrated Windows authentication cannot pass through a firewall.

With this, I wouldn't think he would be logging in at all (or at least have anonymous access)... which wouldn't explain why they can create a folder, but not upload.

On a random thought--what type of file are they trying to upload? Perhaps it's a blocked file extension?

Thanks for the info. I'm using both Basic and Integrated Windows Authentication. I have other users that are not having trouble so I know it's not an IIS setting.

The user is trying to upload a MS Word document with one word in the body.

He's not receiving any errors messages other than the normal IE one you get when a loading webpage times out.

I think its a local issue with his computer. My problem is that I can't figure out exactly what that issue is. I want to point my finger at his Norton antivirus/internet security program but I can't prove it.

Hmmm; Norton IS, huh? Tried having them add your extranet site to the "allowed/safe/secured" sites in Norton IS? That should prevent IS from blocking/hendering anything to that domain. If nothing else, that'd somewhat put IS out of the picture as a hinderance.

It seems we found the source of the problem. The user travelled this week and was had no trouble uploading/deleting files from this other location. We are now pointing fingers at his home router/firewall.
